25 Best Things to Do in Portugal

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 8 October 2026

Portugal packs an incredible amount into a small country: hilltop capitals, fairy-tale palaces, wine valleys, golden cliffs, volcanic islands and some of the best food in Europe. Here are the 25 best things to do in Portugal, picked by the families, members and locals of our Portugal Travel Tips groups, with links to our detailed guides for each one.

Quick answer: on a first trip, don’t miss Lisbon’s Alfama, Sintra’s palaces, Porto and the Douro Valley, the Algarve’s cliffs and Benagil Cave, and a pastel de nata (or three). With more time, add Évora, Madeira or the Azores. Our 10-day itinerary puts the highlights together.

FAQ

How many days do you need in Portugal?

Seven to ten days is ideal for a first trip: enough for Lisbon, Sintra and Porto, plus the Douro Valley or the Algarve. With two weeks you can add the Alentejo or Madeira.

What is the best month to visit Portugal?

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm, sunny and less crowded than July and August. Winter is mild and quiet, which suits city breaks.

Do you need a car in Portugal?

Not for Lisbon, Porto, Sintra or Cascais, where trains, buses and ride apps are easier. A car is best for the Algarve beyond the main towns, the Douro Valley, the Alentejo and the islands.

Is Portugal expensive to visit?

It’s still good value compared with much of Western Europe, though Lisbon and the Algarve in summer cost more. Budget for a tourist tax of €4 per person per night in Lisbon and €3 in Porto.
