The Best Day Trips from the Algarve (Including Seville)

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

The beaches are wonderful, but some of the best days of an Algarve holiday are spent away from them: a whitewashed hill town, the cliffs at the end of Europe, the mountains of Monchique, or even a day in Spain. Here are the best day trips from the Algarve, with how to get there and what to expect.

Quick answer: the top picks are Seville (about 2 hours from Faro, a full but amazing day), Sagres and Cape St Vincent, Monchique and Fóia, Silves, Tavira and the Ria Formosa and the riverside town of Mértola. A car gives you the most freedom; organised tours run from all the main resorts.

The Best Day Trips from the Algarve (Including Seville)

Which day trip suits you?

  • Staying in the west (Lagos, Alvor): Sagres, the Costa Vicentina, Monchique and Silves are all within an hour.
  • Staying in the centre (Albufeira, Vilamoura): Silves, Monchique, Tavira and Faro are easy. Seville is a long but possible day.
  • Staying in the east (Tavira, Monte Gordo): Seville, Mértola and the Ria Formosa islands are closest.
  • Without a car: Tavira and Silves are on the Algarve railway line, now fully electric. Since July 2026 many trains run straight through between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António, so fewer trips need a change in Faro. Silves station is about 2km from the town, so take a taxi or local bus from there.

1. Seville, Spain

Andalusia’s capital is about 200km and 2 hours by car from Faro (2h30–3h from Lagos or Albufeira). See the huge Gothic cathedral and the Giralda tower, the Real Alcázar palace, the Plaza de España and the lanes of Santa Cruz. Book the cathedral and Alcázar online in advance, as queues are long. Remember: Spain is an hour ahead, and bring your passport or ID. Group tours with pickups across the Algarve make for a long (about 12-hour) day, and direct coaches (ALSA, FlixBus and Rede Expressos) also link Faro with Seville in about 2.5 to 3 hours. See Seville day trips, or read our Seville day trip guide.

2. Sagres and Cape St Vincent

The southwest tip of Europe: the Sagres fortress on its windswept headland, wild cliffs, surf beaches and the lighthouse at Cape St Vincent, famous for its sunsets. Entry to the fortress costs about €10. Combine it with the beaches of the west coast. About 30 minutes from Lagos. Bring a jacket, as it’s often windy and cooler than the south coast. See Sagres tours or read our Lagos and western Algarve guide.

3. Monchique and Fóia

Green, cool mountains just 30 minutes inland from Portimão. Drive up to Fóia, the Algarve’s highest point (902m), stop at the old spa village of Caldas de Monchique, and try medronho, the local firewater made from the strawberry tree. The mountain also has walking trails and cork oak woods. Jeep safaris are a fun option. See Monchique tours.

4. Silves

Once the Moorish capital of the Algarve, Silves has a red sandstone castle with views over the orange groves, a Gothic cathedral and a pretty riverside. About 20 minutes from Portimão, and lovely combined with Monchique. Allow two to three hours. In August the town usually holds a popular medieval fair. See Monchique and Silves.

5. Tavira and the Ria Formosa

The prettiest town in the Algarve, with a Roman-origin bridge, a small castle garden, many old churches and a riverside lined with cafes. Take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for a long sandy beach, or join a boat trip through the lagoons. Trains from Faro take around 40 minutes. See Tavira and the eastern Algarve and the best Algarve boat trips.

6. Mértola

A hilltop town above the Guadiana river in the Alentejo, about 1h30–2 hours from the coast, with a castle, a mosque turned church, and Islamic and Roman museums. Every other year in May it hosts an Islamic festival with a souk in the streets; the last was in 2025, so the next is due in 2027. Wonderfully off the beaten track. See Mértola.

7. The Costa Vicentina

Huge empty beaches and cliffs on the wild west coast, from Arrifana to Odeceixe, about 30–45 minutes from Lagos. The sea is rougher here, so swim only at lifeguarded beaches. See our Costa Vicentina guide.

8. Évora

The UNESCO-listed Alentejo capital with its Roman temple and Chapel of Bones is about 2.5 hours away, so it’s a long day, better as an overnight. See Évora and the Alentejo, and Monsaraz nearby.

9. Gibraltar (only if you’re keen)

Tours do run, but it’s roughly 4 to 5 hours each way depending on where you start, with very early starts and a late return. Possible, but we’d only recommend it if Gibraltar is high on your list. You’ll need your passport. See Gibraltar trips.

10. Lisbon?

The fast train takes about 3–3.5 hours each way, so it’s too much for a day. Spend at least two nights. See Lisbon to the Algarve.

A sample week

With a week in the central Algarve, two day trips is a good balance. Try Silves and Monchique together on one day (morning in Silves, afternoon in the hills, sunset drink at Fóia), and Sagres and Cape St Vincent on another. If Spain appeals, swap one of these for Seville, but leave a beach day after it to recover.

Food on the road

Each trip has its own speciality. In Monchique, try smoked ham and sausages and the honey-and-medronho liqueur. Tavira is known for octopus and tuna. In Sagres, look for barnacles (perceves) and grilled fish. In the Alentejo, expect hearty pork, bread soups and local wine.

Tips

  • Car or tour? A car is cheaper for families and more flexible. Tours avoid the driving and include pickups. See car rental and driving in Portugal.
  • Start early in summer to avoid the heat inland, where it can be 10°C hotter than the coast.
  • Tolls: the A22 motorway across the Algarve has been toll-free since January 2025; Spanish motorways to Seville are mostly free too.
  • Spain: remember the time difference, and check your car hire allows cross-border driving.
  • Opening days: many museums and monuments close one day a week, often Monday. Check before you set off.

FAQ

Can you do a day trip to Seville from the Algarve?

Yes, especially from Faro or the eastern Algarve, about 2 hours away by car. From Lagos or Albufeira it is a long day, so an overnight stay is easier.

What time is it in Seville?

Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal all year, so allow for it when you book tickets or plan your drive back.

Can you swim to Benagil Cave?

No. Since August 2024 you can’t swim to the cave or land on its beach. You can see it from a boat, or by kayak or paddleboard with a licensed guide. See Benagil Cave.

How much does Sagres Fortress cost?

About €10 for adults. The cliffs and the viewpoint at Cape St Vincent are free.
