The Best Hotels in Nazare
Nazaré is a fishing town with a huge sandy beach, a clifftop village above, and in winter the biggest waves in the world. Staying overnight lets you enjoy it after the day-trippers leave, and catch sunset over the Atlantic. Here are the best hotels in Nazaré.
Quick answer: for a heated rooftop pool with sea views, Hotel Praia. For the beachfront on the main square, Hotel Mar Bravo. For a good-value base near the sand, Hotel Maré. For a pool and spa above town, Miramar Hotel Spa & Apartments. Book a sea-view room if you can.

Why stay the night?
Most visitors see Nazaré on a day trip from Lisbon, often squeezed between Óbidos and Fátima. That leaves the town crowded at midday and quiet in the evening. If you stay, you get the beach to yourself in the morning, sunset from the cliffs at Sítio, and a relaxed seafood dinner. In winter, staying over also means you can head to the lighthouse at first light when a big swell is running.
Nazaré is also a handy base for the Silver Coast. Alcobaça, Óbidos, Batalha and Fátima are all within about an hour’s drive, so two or three nights here lets you see the region without packing and unpacking every day.
The best hotels
1. Hotel Praia
A four-star 50m from the beach, with a heated, covered rooftop pool open all year and sea views. It has around 80 rooms, many with balconies, plus a gym and a sea-facing terrace bar. The best all-rounder, and a good choice for a winter stay when the outdoor pools elsewhere are too cold. Check prices
2. Hotel Mar Bravo
Right on the beachfront by the main square, with sea-view rooms and a well-known seafood restaurant. You can’t get much closer to the sand. The restaurant has a covered terrace facing the beach, and it’s a good place for cataplana or fish baked in salt even if you’re not staying. Check prices
3. Hotel Maré
Less than 100m from the beach, with balconies and an ocean-view breakfast room. Good value for the location. It’s on a street just behind the seafront, so it’s a little quieter than the hotels on the main avenue. Check prices
4. Hotel Oceano
Simple rooms right on the seafront avenue. You’re paying for the location rather than the facilities, so it suits a short stay. It’s a small hotel of around 30 rooms, each with a balcony, and breakfast is included. Check prices
5. Miramar Hotel Spa & Apartments
Up in Pederneira, about 10 minutes’ walk above the beach, with an outdoor pool and spa. Good for families with its apartments. The spa has an indoor pool with water jets, a jacuzzi and a Turkish bath, and most rooms look out to sea. Check prices

Which hotel suits you?
- Winter and wave season: Hotel Praia, for the heated indoor rooftop pool.
- Beach holiday: Hotel Mar Bravo or Hotel Oceano, for stepping straight onto the sand.
- Value: Hotel Maré, close to the beach without the seafront price.
- Families and longer stays: Miramar, for the apartments, the pool and the quieter setting.
Where to stay
- The beachfront (Praia): right on the action, with restaurants and the promenade. Best for first visits and for anyone without a car.
- Sítio: the clifftop village reached by the funicular, quieter and with the views towards the big-wave lighthouse. Good for wave season, as Praia do Norte is close by.
- Pederneira: the old hilltop village above town, peaceful with views. Expect a steep walk back up from the beach.
Getting there
- By car: about 1h30 from Lisbon via the A8. Parking near the beach is tight in summer, so ask your hotel about parking when you book.
- By bus: Rede Expressos coaches run from Lisbon’s Sete Rios bus station to Nazaré, taking about 1h45 to 2 hours. There’s no train station in town, so the bus is the easiest option without a car. See travelling Portugal by bus.
- The funicular: links the beach with Sítio in a few minutes and has run since 1889. It has had several closures for maintenance since September 2025, with a replacement bus between the beach and Sítio, so check that it’s running when you arrive. You can also walk up the steep path in about 20 minutes.
What to do
- The beach: a wide curve of sand in front of the town, with colourful old fishing boats displayed on the sand.
- Sítio: the clifftop square, the Nossa Senhora da Nazaré church and the viewpoint over the town and beach.
- The lighthouse: the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo looks over Praia do Norte, where the giant winter waves break. See Nazaré’s big waves.
- Traditions: look out for older women in the traditional layered skirts, and fish drying on racks along the beach.
What to eat
Nazaré is a fishing town, so seafood is the point. Look for grilled sardines in summer, caldeirada (fish stew), and the sun-dried fish you’ll see laid out on racks along the beach. See Portuguese seafood.
Tips
- Big-wave season: October to March. Hotels fill on days when a big swell is forecast.
- Summer: the beach is packed and prices peak in August.
- Spring and autumn: mild weather, lower prices and easy booking. September also brings the town’s main religious festival in Sítio, with 8 September the key day.
- How long: one or two nights is enough for Nazaré itself, more if you’re using it as a base.
- Combine with Óbidos, Fátima and the Silver Coast. Alcobaça’s monastery is a short drive inland.
