Things to Do in Carvoeiro and Lagoa
Carvoeiro is a small fishing village in a cove, surrounded by cliffs, coves and sea caves, and it’s one of the best bases in the Algarve. Benagil and Praia da Marinha are minutes away, and there’s a cliff-top boardwalk right from the village. Here are the best things to do in Carvoeiro and around Lagoa.
Quick answer: walk the boardwalk to Algar Seco, swim at Carvoeiro beach and Praia do Carvalho (through a tunnel in the rock), take a kayak or boat to Benagil, hike the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, visit Slide & Splash (open until 31 October) and the SandCity sand-sculpture park, and taste wine among sculptures at Quinta dos Vales.

Why go
Carvoeiro puts you in the middle of the Algarve’s most dramatic stretch of coast, between Portimão and Armacção de Pêra. It’s small enough to walk around, with whitewashed houses stacked up the hillsides, but it has plenty of restaurants and places to stay. The cliffs, caves and coves along this coast are the reason most people come.
In Carvoeiro
Carvoeiro beach and village
A small sandy beach in the middle of the village, framed by colourful houses on the cliffs. Fishing boats still pull up on the sand, and boat trips to the caves leave from here in summer. The beach gets very full in July and August, so go early or late in the day.
The boardwalk and Algar Seco
A wooden boardwalk runs along the clifftops east of the village to Algar Seco, a maze of rock formations, pools and a natural “window” over the sea. Beautiful at sunset. It’s an easy walk from the village centre. Allow an hour or so to explore, and wear shoes with grip, as the rocks can be slippery.
The boardwalk itself is only about 600m long and free to use. It starts by the little chapel of Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, built on the site of an old fort above the village, and signs along the way explain the plants and wildlife of the cliffs. Steps lead down from the end into Algar Seco.
Praia do Carvalho
A hidden cove reached through a tunnel carved in the rock, near the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. The steps down are steep and there are no facilities to speak of, so bring water.
Benagil and the Seven Hanging Valleys
- Benagil Cave: about 10 minutes away. Visit by licensed boat or guided kayak or paddleboard only. Since 2024 you can’t swim to the cave or land on its beach, and kayaks must go with a licensed guide. See kayak tours or read Benagil Cave.
- Seven Hanging Valleys trail: about 5.7km each way between Praia da Marinha and Praia de Vale Centeanes, passing Benagil and Praia do Carvalho, with spectacular clifftop views. Start early. Most people take two to three hours one way, with stops. There’s little shade and the cliff edges are unfenced in places. See the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.
- Praia da Marinha: one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, a short drive away. Its car park fills early in summer.
Around Lagoa
- Slide & Splash: the Algarve’s classic water park, celebrating 40 years in 2026. Open from April to 31 October in 2026. Adult tickets are about €32 to €35 and children’s about €24 to €27, depending on the season, with a discount for booking online. In October it usually opens 10am to 5pm and closes on Sundays. See tickets.
- SandCity: a huge sand-sculpture park on the EN125 in Lagoa, with over 100 sculptures. In summer it usually stays open into the evening. See tickets.
- Quinta dos Vales: a winery near Estômbar with sculptures in its grounds (free to walk) and wine-and-art tours (about €36).
- Porches pottery: hand-painted Algarve ceramics.
- Ferragudo: a pretty fishing village 10 minutes away. See the best Algarve villages.
Getting there
- From Faro airport: about an hour by car on the A22, which has been toll-free since January 2025.
- By train: the nearest big station is Portimão, on the Algarve line, about 15 minutes away by taxi.
- By bus: local buses link Carvoeiro with Lagoa, where you can connect to Portimão and other towns. Check current times, as services are limited.
- Getting around: a car makes it much easier to reach Marinha, Benagil and the inland sights. See getting around the Algarve.
How long to spend
Two or three days covers the village, the coast walks and a cave trip. Carvoeiro also works well as a base for a week, with day trips east and west.
A one-day plan
- Early morning: walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Praia da Marinha before the heat.
- Late morning: a swim at Marinha, or a guided kayak or boat trip to Benagil.
- Afternoon: lunch and a rest in Carvoeiro, then Praia do Carvalho.
- Sunset: the boardwalk to Algar Seco, then dinner in the village.
Food
Expect grilled sardines and fresh fish, cataplana (seafood cooked in a copper pan), octopus and clams. Lagoa is one of the Algarve’s wine areas, so try a local white or rosé. For something sweet, look for little almond and fig sweets in the bakeries.
When to go
- May, June and September: the best balance of warm weather, sea temperature and space on the beaches.
- July and August: hot, busy and lively. Book places to stay and cave tours well ahead.
- Spring and autumn: ideal for the cliff walks.
- Winter: quiet and mild. Some restaurants close, and boat trips depend on the weather.
Where to stay
Carvoeiro is a great central base for families and couples. See family resorts (including Tivoli Carvoeiro) or browse Carvoeiro stays.
Tips
- The village is hilly and parking is tight in summer.
- Go early to Marinha and Benagil to avoid crowds and full car parks.
- Boat and kayak trips are cancelled when the sea is rough, so leave a spare day.
- Stay back from cliff edges, which can crumble without warning.
FAQ
Can you swim to Benagil cave from Carvoeiro?
No. Since 2024 swimming to the cave and landing on its beach are banned. You can see it from a licensed boat, or paddle in with a licensed kayak or paddleboard guide.
Is the Carvoeiro boardwalk free?
Yes. The boardwalk to Algar Seco is free and open to everyone. It’s about 600m long and easy for most ages, though the rocks at the end are uneven.
Is Slide & Splash open in October?
Yes, until 31 October in 2026. October hours are usually 10am to 5pm, and the park closes on Sundays that month.
Do you need a car in Carvoeiro?
Not for the village, the beach and the boardwalk. For Praia da Marinha, the trail start and the Lagoa sights, a car or taxi is much easier, as buses are limited.
