The Best Rooftop Bars in Lisbon
Lisbon is a city of hills, so naturally it’s a city of rooftops. From a garden bar on top of a car park to sleek hotel terraces, these are the best rooftop bars in Lisbon for a sunset drink, with views over terracotta roofs, the castle and the River Tagus.
Quick answer: for the coolest vibe, Park on top of a car park in Bairro Alto. For castle views, the Rooftop Bar at Hotel Mundial or Topo Martim Moniz. For glamour, SEEN Sky Bar at the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. For river views, the terraces at the Bairro Alto Hotel. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, as the best spots fill up fast.

Why go up
Lisbon faces south and west over the river, so the evening light is spectacular. The sun drops behind the 25 de Abril bridge, the roofs turn orange and the castle lights up. A rooftop drink is the easiest way to see it, and most bars are free to enter. Pick your bar by the view you want: river and bridge from the west side of the centre, castle and old town from Martim Moniz and Chiado.
The best rooftop bars
1. Park (Bairro Alto)
Take the lift to the top of a multi-storey car park on Calçada do Combro and you’ll find a leafy garden bar with views over the river and the 25 de Abril bridge. Relaxed in the afternoon, busier with DJs later in the week. It usually opens from early afternoon until late, but days and hours change with the season, so check before you go. It doesn’t usually take reservations, so arrive early for a sunset table.
2. SEEN Sky Bar (Avenida da Liberdade)
On the ninth floor of the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, renovated in 2024 with a stylish restaurant and bar. Cocktails around €16–22, and lovely views over the city to the castle and down to the river. It now serves lunch too, and evenings often have DJs. Dress smartly, and book for Friday and Saturday nights. One for a special evening. Stay here: Tivoli Avenida Liberdade.
3. Rooftop Bar at Hotel Mundial (Martim Moniz)
On the top floor, with 360° views and the castle almost close enough to touch. Central and often less crowded than the trendier spots, with sunset parties in spring and summer. A good first stop if you’re staying in the Baixa. The hotel is being renovated in stages and is due to become the Renaissance Mundial Lisbon; the rooftop has stayed open during the works, with its own makeover planned for the final stage. Stay here: Hotel Mundial.
4. Topo Martim Moniz and Topo Chiado
Topo Martim Moniz sits on top of the Martim Moniz shopping centre, with DJs, cocktails and castle views. It usually stays open until after midnight. It faces the castle rather than the sunset, so it’s at its best just after dark, when the walls light up. Topo Chiado, the sister bar, is on the Terraços do Carmo behind the ruined Carmo Convent, with views over the Baixa to the castle.
5. Bairro Alto Hotel terraces
The hotel’s sixth-floor terrace looks over the rooftops to the river and is open to non-guests. There’s also the terrace of the BAHR restaurant on the fifth floor. Elegant, central and perfect before dinner in Chiado. Stay here: Bairro Alto Hotel.
6. Beyond Rooftop Bar (Chiado)
One of the newest rooftops in the city, opened in September 2025 on the top two floors of the Lisbon Chiado Hotel. It has two terraces and an upper deck with views across the Baixa, from the castle and the Sé to part of the 25 de Abril bridge, and it’s open to non-guests.
7. Lumi (Bairro Alto)
The rooftop bar and restaurant at The Lumiares, with views of both the river and the castle. It’s small, so book ahead for sunset. Stay here: The Lumiares.
8. Rossio Gastrobar (Rossio)
At the top of the Altis Avenida hotel, overlooking Rossio square and the castle. Great for food as well as drinks, and a calm choice in the middle of the busiest part of town.
Note: Rio Maravilha at LX Factory, a favourite in older guides, is now listed as closed. LX Factory is still worth an afternoon for its shops, street art and restaurants.
A rooftop evening plan
- An hour before sunset: start at Park or Lumi for the bridge and river view.
- After dark: walk down through Chiado to Topo Chiado or Beyond for the castle lit up.
- Dinner: eat in Chiado or Bairro Alto from about 8:30pm, when locals eat. See Chiado and Bairro Alto.
When to go
Rooftop season runs from about April to October. In midsummer the sun sets at around 9pm, while in winter it’s before 6pm and many terraces get chilly or close in rain. June is the busiest month, with the Santo António street parties filling the city. Weekdays are calmer than Fridays and Saturdays everywhere.
Free alternatives
Lisbon’s miradouros (viewpoints) are free and many have kiosks selling drinks: Senhora do Monte, Graça and Santa Catarina are local favourites at sunset. See the best Lisbon viewpoints.
Tips
- Sunset is peak time: arrive 30–45 minutes early, or book where possible.
- Bring a layer: rooftops get breezy once the sun goes down.
- Check opening: some rooftops close in bad weather or out of season, and hotel bars may limit non-guests at busy times.
- Prices: expect €10–16 for cocktails at most places, more at hotel bars. A beer or a glass of wine is much cheaper.
- Getting there: the Glória and Bica funiculars and the Santa Justa lift are closed, so walk up to Bairro Alto or take a taxi. The metro to Baixa-Chiado puts you close to most of these bars.
- Takeaway rules: since February 2026 shops and bars can’t sell alcohol to take away late at night. Drinking at the bar or on its terrace is fine during opening hours. See Lisbon nightlife.
