Where to Stay in Albufeira
Albufeira is the Algarve’s biggest resort, with very different areas: a whitewashed old town above the beach, a party strip, and quieter clifftop resorts with some of the region’s best beaches. Choosing the right area makes all the difference. Here’s where to stay.
Quick answer: stay in the old town for atmosphere and the main beach, Praia da Oura or the Strip for nightlife, Santa Eulália and Falésia for families and beautiful beaches, or Galé and Salgados to the west for calm, golf and dunes. See places to stay in Albufeira.

How to choose
Albufeira spreads for several kilometres along the coast. The old town sits in the middle, the nightlife is to the east around Praia da Oura, and the big resort hotels line the clifftops further east and west. Ask yourself three questions: do you want to walk to restaurants at night, do you want quiet, and will you have a car? If you won’t drive, stay in or close to the old town. If you have a car or plan to stay inside a resort, the outer areas give you more space and better beaches.
As a rough guide, the old town suits couples and first-timers, the Strip suits groups, the eastern clifftops suit families, and the west suits golfers and anyone who wants space.
The best areas
Old town
Lanes of white houses, restaurants and bars above Praia dos Pescadores. It’s lively but charming. Praia do Peneco is right below the town, with a public lift down to the sand, which saves a steep climb. At the eastern end of Praia dos Pescadores, escalators near the Pau da Bandeira viewpoint climb the cliff. Try the adults-only Rocamar on the clifftop or the adults-only Hotel Sol e Mar right above the beach.
- Best for: couples and first-timers without a car.
- Watch out for: late-night noise on the busier squares in summer.
Praia da Oura and the Strip
Nightlife central, with bars and clubs along Avenida Sá Carneiro. Best for groups and young travellers. Since late May 2026, the council has made bars close at 3am and clubs at 5am, and minimarkets and off-licences must stop selling at 11pm. A code of conduct also allows fines of €300 to €1,500, for example for walking the streets in swimwear. Praia da Oura itself is a good, sheltered beach at the bottom of the hill. Try Muthu Clube Praia da Oura.
- Best for: groups of friends and stag or hen trips.
- Watch out for: noise until the early hours in high season.
Santa Eulália, Balaia and Falésia
East of town, with clifftop resorts and long beaches. Great for families. Praia da Falésia runs for about 6 km under red and orange cliffs and is one of the best walking beaches in the Algarve. See Praia da Falésia. Try Grande Real Santa Eulália, Pine Cliffs, the adults-only Falésia Hotel, or EPIC SANA.
- Best for: families and anyone who wants a resort with pools and a beach.
- Watch out for: you will need taxis, a car or hotel shuttles to reach the old town.
Olhos de Água
A small fishing village between Albufeira and Falésia, quieter and more local. Its name means “eyes of water”, after the freshwater springs that bubble up on the beach at low tide. Fishing boats still pull up on the sand, and it’s a calm base close to Falésia. See places to stay.
Galé and Salgados
West of town, with a long sandy beach, golf and a lagoon. The Salgados lagoon is good for birdwatching, and the beaches here are open and less crowded. Try Vila Galé Cerro Alagoa (closer to the centre) or The Westin Salgados Beach Resort (the renamed NAU Salgados Dunas Suites, reopened in 2025). It’s too far to walk into town, so plan on a car or taxis.
Getting there and around
- From Faro airport: about 40 km, usually 35 to 45 minutes by car or transfer. See Faro airport transfers.
- By car: the A22 motorway north of town has been toll-free since 2025.
- By train: Albufeira’s station is at Ferreiras, about 6 to 7 km north of the old town, so you need a bus or taxi to finish the trip.
- Town buses: the electric GIRO buses run loops from the bus station in Caliços to the old town, the Strip, Oura and Santa Eulália. They stop in the evening, so check the last departure.
- Around town: taxis and ride-hailing apps link the areas. Walking from the old town to the Strip takes around half an hour, much of it uphill.
Food and drink
Walk a few streets back from the main squares for better value. Look for grilled sardines and fresh fish, and cataplana, seafood cooked in a sealed copper pan. Just inland, the village of Guia is famous for its piri-piri chicken, served there since the 1960s, and usually holds a chicken festival in August.
When to go
July and August are hot, busy and the most expensive. May, June, September and early October are warm enough for the beach with fewer crowds. In winter many bars on the Strip close, but the old town and the big resorts stay open and prices drop. The New Year’s Eve party on Praia dos Pescadores is one of Portugal’s biggest, so book early. Tips
- Noise: avoid the Strip if you want quiet nights.
- Hills: the old town is steep; look for hotels with shuttles or lifts.
- Book early: for July and August, especially for family rooms.
- Parking: it is hard in the old town in summer. Use the paid car parks above town or choose a hotel with parking.
- Tourist tax: Albufeira charges €2 per person per night (age 13 and over) from April to October, for up to seven nights. Hotels usually collect it at check-in.
- All-inclusive: see the best hotels in Albufeira.
