The Best Boutique Hotels in Porto
Porto is full of characterful boutique hotels in restored townhouses, palaces and even a former bank, many with beautiful tiles, original details and a strong sense of place. Here are our favourite boutique hotels in Porto, from riverside palaces to arty townhouses and a quirky budget pick.
Quick answer: for luxury with pools and a spa, Casa da Companhia or PortoBay Flores. For romance, Torel 1884 or the riverside Palácio do Freixo. For something arty and intimate, Tipografia do Conto. For classic elegance, Grande Hotel do Porto, or the Infante Sagres once it reopens as Experimental Porto. On a budget, the quirky Zero Box Lodge.

Why Porto suits boutique hotels
Much of central Porto is UNESCO-listed, and its tall, narrow granite townhouses do not suit big chain hotels. Instead, old merchants’ houses, shops and palaces have been turned into small hotels that keep their tiled façades, wooden staircases and high ceilings. You get a strong sense of the city without giving up comfort, and most of the hotels below are a short walk from São Bento station and the river.
