The Best Hotels on Sao Miguel, Azores

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 8 October 2026

Where you stay on São Miguel shapes your Azores trip: hot springs on the doorstep in Furnas, the restaurants of Ponta Delgada, a surfer’s beach on the north coast, or a lakeside lodge in the crater of Sete Cidades. Here are the best hotels on São Miguel.

Quick answer: stay a few nights in Ponta Delgada (try Octant Ponta Delgada or Hotel do Colégio) and a night or two in Furnas at the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel or Octant Furnas for the thermal pools. For a special escape, White Exclusive Suites on the cliffs or Santa Barbara Eco-Beach Resort by the sea. For the lake, Sete Cidades Lake Lodge.

The Best Hotels on Sao Miguel, Azores

How to plan your stay

São Miguel is the biggest island in the Azores, but you can drive from one end to the other in under two hours. Most visitors base themselves in Ponta Delgada, where the airport, restaurants and whale-watching boats are. The weather changes fast and differs from one side of the island to the other, so a central base lets you head for whichever area looks clearest that morning. Then move to Furnas for a night or two to enjoy the hot springs after the day trippers leave.

Furnas

1. Terra Nostra Garden Hotel

A classic Art Deco hotel inside the famous Terra Nostra Park, with free access to its huge thermal pool, plus two pools and a spa. Day visitors pay about €17 for a dated park ticket and can only use the pool in the daytime, usually from mid-morning to late afternoon, but hotel guests can use the garden and thermal pools 24 hours a day. The 12-hectare garden is famous for its camellias. Check prices

2. Octant Furnas

The former Furnas Boutique Hotel, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools at about 37°C, open 24 hours. Soak under the stars. It is now officially rated five stars. Check prices

Ponta Delgada

3. Octant Ponta Delgada

A modern seafront hotel (formerly the Azor Hotel) with an outdoor pool and views over the marina. It has around 120 rooms, most with sea views, and the airport is less than 10 minutes away by car. Walk to restaurants. Check prices

4. Hotel do Colégio

A charming hotel in a 19th-century building in the centre, with an outdoor pool and a pool bar. It is a few minutes’ walk from the harbour. Check prices

5. Senhora da Rosa

A peaceful 18th-century estate on the outskirts, once an orange farm, with a heated pool and spa inside a former pineapple greenhouse. Some rooms are wooden garden lodges. Check prices

Coast and countryside

6. White Exclusive Suites & Villas (Lagoa)

A minimalist clifftop hideaway with about nine suites, a few villas and a pool over the ocean. The white, Greek-island style is unlike anything else on the island, every unit faces the sea, and the restaurant is for guests only. One for a special occasion. Check prices

7. Santa Barbara Eco-Beach Resort (Ribeira Grande)

Eco villas above a black-sand surf beach on the north coast. Relaxed and stylish, with a beach bar and a restaurant using produce from its own farm. Ponta Delgada is about 15–20 minutes away. Check prices

8. Pedras do Mar Resort & Spa (Fenais da Luz)

A resort on the north coast, 10km from Ponta Delgada, with a sea-view infinity pool, an indoor pool and a spa. It sits on the clifftop, and about half the rooms face the ocean. Check prices

9. Sete Cidades Lake Lodge

Wooden bungalows by the famous crater lakes. Wake up to mist on the water. Each bungalow has a small kitchen and a fireplace, which helps because there are few places to eat in the village at night. Note the payment terms when booking. See Sete Cidades. Check prices

Getting around

  • From the airport: João Paulo II airport is on the edge of Ponta Delgada, about 3km from the centre and roughly 10 minutes by taxi.
  • Driving times: from Ponta Delgada, Furnas is roughly 45 minutes, Sete Cidades about 30 minutes and Ribeira Grande about 20 minutes.
  • Buses: local buses link the main towns, but services are limited. A hire car gives you far more freedom.
  • Parking: easy outside the city. In Ponta Delgada, ask your hotel about parking before you arrive.

How long to stay

Five days is a good minimum: three nights in Ponta Delgada and two in Furnas. With a week, add a night on the north coast or by the lake at Sete Cidades.

Food

Try cozido das Furnas, a meat and vegetable stew slow-cooked in the hot volcanic ground, served at lunchtime in Furnas. The pots are buried beside Furnas lake, where non-residents pay a small entry fee of about €3. Look out for Azores pineapples grown in greenhouses around Ponta Delgada, local cheese, fresh fish and tea from Europe’s oldest tea plantations on the north coast. See Gorreana tea plantation.

When to go

June to September is warmest and driest, and the hydrangeas bloom in early summer. Spring and autumn are greener and quieter. Winter is mild but wet and windy, and some boat trips run less often.

Tips

  • Split your stay: Ponta Delgada for convenience, Furnas for the hot springs.
  • You’ll want a car to explore. See our 5-day São Miguel itinerary.
  • Book early for July and August.
  • Swimwear tip: iron-rich thermal water can stain light swimsuits, so pack a dark one.
  • Pack layers: the weather can change several times a day.
  • Tourist tax: São Miguel’s councils now add a small per-night tourist tax, usually paid at your hotel.
