The Best Family Resorts in the Algarve

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 8 October 2026

The Algarve is one of Europe’s best family holiday destinations: safe sandy beaches, sunshine for most of the year, and resorts that really understand kids. As parents of two little ones who live in Portugal, here are the family resorts we’d book, plus the water parks and tips that make a holiday with children easier.

Quick answer: Martinhal Sagres is built entirely around families (five kids’ clubs). Pine Cliffs is the all-round luxury pick. Vila Vita Parc for a special treat, Grande Real Santa Eulália for kids’ pools near Albufeira, Pestana Alvor Praia for a beachfront stay, and Vila Galé Albacora for good value in the calm east.

The Best Family Resorts in the Algarve

West, central or east?

Where you stay shapes the whole holiday. The west (Sagres, Lagos) has wilder scenery and cooler, livelier sea. The centre (Albufeira, Vilamoura, Carvoeiro) has the most resorts, water parks and restaurants, and is closest to Faro airport. The east (Tavira, the Ria Formosa) has the calmest, warmest water and a slower pace. See east vs west Algarve.

The best family resorts

1. Martinhal Sagres Beach Family Resort

A whole resort designed for families, by a family: rooms, villas and houses steps from a sheltered beach, five age-specific kids’ clubs from a crèche for babies (from six months) to a teen room for 14 to 17-year-olds, family restaurants and lots of outdoor space. There are also football and tennis academies for older children, and baby equipment can be booked before you arrive. Out at the wild western tip, so it’s peaceful. Check prices at Martinhal Sagres

2. Pine Cliffs Resort (Albufeira)

Our all-round favourite: clifftop pine forest above Falésia beach, the Porto Pirata kids’ area, a children’s farm, mini golf, lots of pools and apartments for bigger families. Porto Pirata is a supervised kids’ village for ages one to eight, with two pirate ships and its own pools. Check prices at Pine Cliffs

3. Vila Vita Parc (Armação de Pêra)

A luxurious clifftop resort with lush gardens, several pools, a private beach, a kids’ club and fine restaurants. Younger children have a crèche, and the kids’ club takes four to 11-year-olds. A real splurge, but magical. Check prices at Vila Vita Parc

4. Grande Real Santa Eulália (Albufeira)

A five-star right above Santa Eulália beach, with three kids’ pools and the Realito Kids Club, which runs supervised games and activities for ages three to 12 in summer. Close to Albufeira’s attractions, but in a calmer spot. Check prices at Grande Real Santa Eulália

5. Pestana Alvor Praia

Directly above the beautiful Três Irmãos beach near Alvor, with big pools and gardens, a playground, mini golf and a kids’ club from June to September. Alvor’s long, flat beach and boardwalk are perfect for little legs. Check prices at Pestana Alvor Praia

6. Tivoli Carvoeiro

On the cliffs at Carvoeiro, reopened as a five-star in April 2025 after a major renovation, with larger rooms, pools overlooking the sea and a path down to the beach. A good base for Benagil and Marinha. Check prices at Tivoli Carvoeiro

7. Domes Lake Algarve (Vilamoura)

A stylish five-star in Vilamoura, built around its own seawater lake, with two-bedroom family suites, a kids’ club and a children’s gardening club. Great for families who still want some style. Check prices at Domes Lake Algarve

8. Vila Galé Albacora (Tavira)

A converted tuna fishing village in the Ria Formosa near Tavira, with pools and a boat to the island beach. Its public areas were refreshed in 2026. Calmer, warmer water in the east and good value. Check prices at Vila Galé Albacora

Water parks and family days out

  • Zoomarine (near Albufeira): dolphins, sea lions, rides and pools. A full day. It opened its 2026 season in March with a new rollercoaster, Nautilus. See Zoomarine tickets.
  • Slide & Splash (Lagoa): the classic Algarve water park.
  • Aquashow (Quarteira) and Aqualand (Alcantarilha): big slides and wave pools. See water park tickets.
  • Krazy World (Algoz): a small zoo with many rescued animals, pony rides, mini golf and pools with slides, great for younger children.
  • Boat trips: dolphin watching and calm Ria Formosa trips work well with kids. See the best Algarve boat trips.

Water parks usually open from late spring to September, and online tickets are often cheaper than at the gate. Check current prices and opening dates before you go. See Algarve water parks.

How long and when to go

A week is ideal: enough for a few lazy pool days, a water park, a boat trip and a beach day or two. June and September are the best months for young children, with warm weather, lifeguards on duty and fewer crowds than in July and August. Spring and autumn half-terms work well too, though the sea is cool and some water parks are shut.

Food with kids

Portuguese food is easy for children. Grilled chicken (including the Algarve’s piri-piri chicken, ask for it without the hot sauce), grilled fish, soups and rice dishes are on most menus. Fresh fruit, bread and pastéis de nata make good snacks.

Our tips for the Algarve with kids

  • Choose calm beaches: Meia Praia (Lagos), Alvor, Armação de Pêra and the lagoon side of the Ria Formosa islands are gentler than the west coast.
  • Swim at lifeguarded beaches (usually June to mid-September) and watch the flags.
  • Midday sun is strong: beach in the morning and late afternoon, pool or nap in between.
  • Book cots and car seats in advance. See Faro airport transfers.
  • Car seat rules: children under 12 and under 135cm must ride in an approved seat in the back. Babies can sit in front only in a rear-facing seat with the airbag off.
  • Families with babies have the legal right to priority queues in shops and services.
  • Restaurants are very welcoming to children; half portions are common.
  • Driving: the A22 motorway across the Algarve has been toll-free since January 2025, which makes day trips cheaper.

Flying into Faro? Book a fixed-price pickup with Welcome Pickups. An English-speaking driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight if it’s late, and child seats can be added when you book.

FAQ

Which Algarve resort is best for babies?

Martinhal Sagres, which has a crèche from six months and baby equipment you can book ahead. Pine Cliffs is a good alternative, with Porto Pirata taking children from about one year old.

Which part of the Algarve is best for young children?

The east, around Tavira and the Ria Formosa, has the calmest and warmest water. The centre, around Albufeira, is best if you want water parks and short airport transfers.

Do children need car seats in Portugal?

Yes. Under-12s who are under 135cm must use an approved child seat in the back, so book one with your hire car or transfer.
