The Best Hotels in the Algarve
The Algarve has hotels for every kind of trip, from luxury clifftop resorts and family all-inclusives to adults-only hideaways and convents turned pousadas. Here are the best hotels in the Algarve, picked by type and area, with links to our detailed town guides.
Quick answer: for luxury, book Vila Vita Parc or the Conrad at Quinta do Lago. For families, try Pine Cliffs, Martinhal Sagres or Grande Real Santa Eulália. For adults only, try the Falésia Hotel or Rocamar in Albufeira. For history, stay at the Pousada Convento de Tavira. In Lagos, the Cascade Wellness Resort stands out.

Why the right hotel matters here
The Algarve’s coast changes a lot over about 150km. The west has cliffs and coves, the centre has long sandy beaches and big resorts, and the east has lagoons, islands and quieter towns. Many of the best hotels sit outside the towns on clifftops or by golf courses, so check how far yours is from a beach, shops and restaurants before you book. If you won’t have a car, a hotel you can walk from matters even more.
Luxury resorts
- Vila Vita Parc (Armação de Pêra): clifftop gardens, pools and top restaurants. Check prices.
- Conrad Algarve (Quinta do Lago): elegant, near golf and the Ria Formosa. Check prices.
- Pine Cliffs (Albufeira): a big clifftop resort with a famous beach bar below. Check prices.
- Vila Joya (Albufeira): a small luxury hideaway known for its restaurant. Check prices.
The luxury resorts are best if you plan to spend most of your time on site. Vila Vita Parc and Pine Cliffs are large, with several restaurants, so you can stay for a week without getting bored. The Conrad is close to Quinta do Lago’s golf courses and the boardwalks of the Ria Formosa.
Food is a big part of the draw. Vila Vita Parc is home to Ocean, and chef Dieter Koschina’s restaurant at Vila Joya is the reason many guests book. Both kept two Michelin stars in the 2026 guide, so reserve a table well before you travel. Pine Cliffs is now part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection and has several hotels on one site, from rooms to suites and apartments, all above Praia da Falésia.
Families
- Martinhal Sagres: built for families, by the beach. Check prices.
- Grande Real Santa Eulália (Albufeira): beachfront, with kids’ clubs. Check prices.
- Pestana Alvor Praia: on the clifftop above Praia dos Três Irmãos, at the eastern end of Alvor’s long beach, with steps and a lift down to the sand. Check prices.
- Jupiter Albufeira: an all-inclusive family hotel. Check prices.
For families, look for direct beach access, a shallow pool, a kids’ club with the hours you need, and family rooms or apartments. Martinhal Sagres is quieter and windier, at the far west. The Albufeira and Alvor hotels have calmer, longer beaches and more to do nearby. See the best Algarve family resorts and the Algarve with kids.
Martinhal mixes a hotel with village houses, which suit bigger families who want a kitchen. Jupiter Albufeira has a small water park with slides, a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12 and a free shuttle into town. Grande Real Santa Eulália sits right above Santa Eulália beach, east of Albufeira’s busiest strip.
Adults only
- Falésia Hotel (Albufeira): a short walk from Praia da Falésia. Check prices.
- Rocamar Exclusive (Albufeira): clifftop, in the old town. Check prices.
- AP Maria Nova Lounge (Tavira): rooftop pool. Check prices.
Rocamar is the one to pick if you want to walk to old-town restaurants. The Falésia Hotel is quieter, set in large gardens about 800m from one of the Algarve’s longest beaches, with a hotel shuttle at set times. AP Maria Nova Lounge puts you within walking distance of Tavira’s old bridge and riverside. Some booking sites now list it as adults-friendly: guests must be 16 or over.
By town
- Lagos: Cascade Wellness Resort, Iberostar Selection and Lagos Avenida. See the best hotels in Lagos.
- Albufeira: see the best hotels in Albufeira and luxury hotels in Albufeira.
- Tavira: Pousada Convento de Tavira and Vila Galé Albacora. See the best hotels in Tavira.
- Carvoeiro: Tivoli Carvoeiro, on the clifftop.
- Vilamoura: Domes Lake Algarve. See Vilamoura.
In Lagos, Lagos Avenida faces the marina and old town, so you can walk everywhere, and it has a rooftop infinity pool. It doesn’t take children under 13. Cascade sits on the clifftop above Porto de Mós beach, near Ponta da Piedade, and the Iberostar is a few minutes’ walk from Meia Praia, the long beach east of town. In Tavira, the pousada is in the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça in the old town, a good choice if you like historic buildings. In Vilamoura, Domes Lake has its own saltwater lake and is close to the marina. See the best pousadas in Portugal.
Which area?
The west (Lagos, Sagres) has the most dramatic scenery. The centre (Albufeira, Vilamoura) has the most resorts and nightlife. The east (Tavira) is calmer and more traditional. See where to stay in the Algarve.
When to book
- July and August: the most expensive months, and the best family hotels fill up early. Book several months ahead.
- May, June, September and October: warm weather and usually lower prices. A good time for adults-only and luxury hotels.
- Winter: the cheapest rates, but some resort hotels close or reduce their facilities. Check that pools, restaurants and kids’ clubs will be open. See the Algarve in winter.
Practical tips
- Tourist tax: several Algarve councils, including Albufeira, Loulé (which covers Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago), Lagoa, Portimão and Faro, charge a nightly tourist tax, usually about €1 to €2 depending on the season and paid at the hotel. Check the amount when you book.
- Getting there: Faro airport is under an hour from most of these hotels. The A22 motorway has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. See Faro airport transfers.
- Read the board basis: all-inclusive deals vary a lot, so check which drinks and restaurants are included.
- Sea views cost extra and are often worth it on the clifftop hotels.
