The Best Family Hotels in Portugal

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

The right hotel can make or break a family holiday. Portugal has excellent family-friendly hotels and resorts, with kids’ clubs, family rooms and pools, especially in the Algarve. Here are some of the best family hotels in Portugal.

Quick answer: for an all-round family resort, try Martinhal Sagres, Pine Cliffs or Grande Real Santa Eulália in the Algarve. For value with pools, try Vila Galé hotels. Near Lisbon, Onyria Marinha Cascais combines beaches and city access. In Lisbon itself, choose a hotel with a pool, such as EPIC SANA.

Where to base a family

Where you stay matters as much as which hotel you pick. Each region suits a different kind of family trip.

  • Central Algarve (Albufeira, Vilamoura, Carvoeiro): the biggest choice of resorts, water parks and beaches, and short transfers from Faro airport. Best for a classic sun-and-pool week.
  • Western Algarve (Lagos, Alvor, Sagres): smaller towns, dramatic beaches and boat trips to sea caves. Good for active families with older children.
  • Eastern Algarve (Tavira and around): warmer, calmer sea water, long sandy islands and a quieter feel. Great for toddlers. See kid-friendly beaches in the Algarve.
  • Cascais and Estoril: a beach town on the train line to Lisbon, so you can mix city days with beach days.
  • Lisbon: best for a short city break. A pool makes a big difference in summer heat.

What each one does best

  • Martinhal Sagres: the most complete family set-up on the list, with kids’ clubs split by age from babies of about six months up to teenagers.
  • Pine Cliffs: a large resort on the cliffs above Praia da Falésia, with several hotels and residences on one site. The Porto Pirata kids’ club is set in a pirate-themed play area, usually open from about 9.30am to 5pm.
  • Grande Real Santa Eulália: right above Santa Eulália beach, a calm, family-friendly beach east of Albufeira. It runs the Realito kids’ club with daily activities and often has summer family offers.
  • Pestana Alvor Praia: on the long sandy beach at Alvor, with a children’s pool, playground and mini-golf. The kids’ club usually runs from June to September only.
  • Domes Lake Algarve: beside a lake with direct access to Praia da Falésia. It was named World’s Best Family Resort 2025 at the World Travel Awards.
  • Vila Galé Albacora: low-rise rooms in an old tuna fishermen’s village on the Ria Formosa lagoon, near the Quatro Águas pier for boats to Tavira island.
  • Jupiter Albufeira: 24-hour all-inclusive, with water slides, a kids’ club for ages about 4 to 12, a baby corner and evening shows. A free shuttle runs to the old town and Praia dos Pescadores.

Onyria Marinha Cascais is now part of IHG’s Vignette Collection. It sits in Quinta da Marinha, between Cascais and Guincho, with a golf course, an indoor pool and a kids’ club, which usually costs extra. You’ll want a car or taxis to reach the beaches and the train. EPIC SANA Lisboa, near the Marquês de Pombal roundabout, has a seasonal outdoor pool plus a heated rooftop pool with city views. Pestana Palace, set in a restored palace in western Lisbon, has large gardens where children can run around.

Types of family accommodation

Family resorts

Kids’ clubs, several pools, entertainment and restaurants on site. The easiest option with young children, as you rarely need to leave. They cost more, and the busiest weeks book up early.

Apartment hotels

Hotel pools and reception, plus a kitchen and a separate bedroom. Good value for families who want to make breakfast and keep naps on track. Very common in the Algarve.

All-inclusive hotels

Meals and drinks in one price. They make budgeting easy, especially with teenagers. Fewer hotels in Portugal work this way than in Spain, so check what is included.

Villas and holiday homes

Private pools and space for bigger groups. Check that the pool has a fence or alarm if you have small children, and that you will have a car.

What to look for

  • Family rooms or apartments with space and kitchens. Interconnecting rooms are worth asking about.
  • Kids’ clubs and babysitting. Check age ranges and whether clubs run outside school holidays.
  • Pools with shallow areas. Heated pools help in spring and autumn, when the sea is still cold.
  • Location: walking distance to a calm beach. Clifftop hotels often have steps or lifts down to the sand.
  • Cots and high chairs: usually free, but request them when you book.
  • Meal times: Portuguese dinners start late. A hotel with an early buffet helps with small children.

Getting there with children

Faro airport is the gateway to the Algarve. Transfers take roughly 30 to 45 minutes to Albufeira or Vilamoura, about an hour to Alvor and around an hour and a half to Sagres. If you hire a car, book child seats in advance, as children under 1.35m must use one. See Faro airport transfers.

When to book

  • School summer holidays (July and August): the busiest and dearest time. Book family rooms months ahead.
  • June and September: warm, with lower prices and quieter pools. Ideal with pre-school children.
  • Easter and October half-term: mild weather and good deals, but the sea is cool. Choose a hotel with a heated pool.

Yes, but fewer than in Spain. Jupiter Albufeira is one example.
