Where to Stay in Lagos, Algarve

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

Lagos is the Algarve’s most popular base for good reason: a lively old town inside medieval walls, golden coves at Ponta da Piedade, a long sandy beach and easy access to the wild west coast. Here’s where to stay in Lagos, area by area.

Quick answer: stay in the old town for restaurants, bars and walking to everything. Choose Praia Dona Ana and Porto de Mós for clifftop beaches and quieter hotels, or Meia Praia for a long sandy beach and resorts. For a calm village feel, consider Praia da Luz. See places to stay in Lagos.

Where to Stay in Lagos, Algarve

Why stay in Lagos?

Lagos works well for almost every kind of trip. You get a real town with a history going back centuries, not just a resort strip. The train line and long-distance buses end here, so you can arrive without a car. And within a short drive you reach the cliffs of Sagres, the surf beaches of the Costa Vicentina and the quiet villages of the western Algarve. The main choice is whether you want to be in the middle of things or close to the beach.

Distances are short. From the old town you can walk to Praia Dona Ana in about 20 minutes and to Ponta da Piedade in about 40, while Meia Praia is just across the footbridge over the marina.

Which area suits you?

  • First visit, no car: the old town.
  • Couples who want sea views: Praia Dona Ana and Porto de Mós.
  • Families with young children: Meia Praia or Praia da Luz.
  • Spa and resort stays: the edge of town.
  • Long, quiet stays: Praia da Luz or the villages further west.

The best areas

Old town

Cobbled lanes, squares, restaurants and nightlife, all within walking distance of the marina and the beaches. Great for couples and first-timers, though it can be noisy at night in summer. Rooms in the centre are often in small guesthouses and apartments, so check for lifts and air conditioning if they matter to you. Try Lagos Avenida on the waterfront or the boutique Hotel Marina Rio.

  • Best for: first visits, foodies, nightlife, no car.
  • Watch out for: late-night noise near the bar streets in July and August.

Lagos Avenida sits on the riverside avenue a few minutes from the marina, with a pool and rooftop terrace. Hotel Marina Rio faces the marina, close to the train and bus stations, with a small rooftop pool, which makes it handy if you arrive by public transport.

Praia Dona Ana and Porto de Mós

South of the old town, near the famous coves and Ponta da Piedade. It’s quieter, with sea views and a 15 to 25 minute walk into town. Most hotels here have pools, and you can walk the clifftop path to the grottos at sunrise or sunset. Try Dona Ana Garden, Tivoli Lagos or WOT Lagos Montemar.

  • Best for: beach lovers, couples, sea views.
  • Watch out for: the walk back from town is uphill.

Dona Ana Garden is a few minutes’ walk above Praia Dona Ana, with a heated pool and free parking. Tivoli Lagos is a large, low-rise hotel spread over several buildings on the edge of the old town, on the side facing the coves. WOT Lagos Montemar is a simpler, smaller option with a good-value feel.

Meia Praia

A 4km sandy beach across the marina, with resorts, apartments and beach bars. Good for families and water sports. The water is often calmer than on the open coves, and the beach is wide enough to find space even in August. Try the Iberostar Selection Lagos.

  • Best for: families, long beach walks, water sports.
  • Watch out for: the far end is a long walk from the old town, so you may want a car or taxis.

The Iberostar Selection Lagos is a large five-star hotel just behind the sand, about five minutes’ drive from the old town, with pools and a spa.

On the edge of town

For a resort feel with spa and pools, try the Cascade Wellness Resort. Hotels on the outskirts tend to have more space and parking, but you’ll drive or take a taxi into the centre. Cascade sits in large grounds near the Ponta da Piedade cliffs and is set up for wellness breaks, with a big spa.

Praia da Luz

A peaceful resort village 10 minutes’ drive west, with a sandy beach, a seafront promenade and a slower pace. Good for families and longer stays. See Praia da Luz, and for villages further west, Salema and Burgau.

Getting there

  • From Faro airport: about an hour by car on the toll-free A22, or by bus or train with a change. See Faro airport transfers.
  • From Lisbon: express buses run direct to Lagos, or take the train and change at Tunes. See Lisbon to the Algarve.
  • Around the Algarve: the Algarve railway line starts in Lagos. It has been fully electric since July 2026, with regional trains east to Faro and some direct trains to Vila Real de Santo António.

Tips

  • Summer: book early, as Lagos fills up fast. July and August are the busiest and dearest months.
  • Shoulder season: May, June and September bring warm weather, lower prices and quieter beaches.
  • Car: handy for the west coast, but not needed in town. Parking in the old town is limited, so ask your hotel before you book.
  • Hills: some streets are steep, especially towards the coves.
  • Families: apartments with kitchens are common and good value for longer stays.

Flying into Faro? Book a fixed-price pickup with Welcome Pickups. An English-speaking driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight if it’s late, and child seats can be added when you book.
