Odeceixe: River and Ocean Beach on the Wild Coast

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 8 October 2026

Odeceixe is a little white village on a hill, right on the border between the Algarve and the Alentejo. Its beach is one of the most beautiful on the west coast: a curve of sand where the Seixe river meets the Atlantic, so you can choose between the river and the waves.

Quick answer: Odeceixe is about 45 minutes north of Lagos and 20 minutes from Aljezur. Swim in the calm river or the ocean at Praia de Odeceixe, climb to the village windmill for views, and walk a stretch of the Fishermen’s Trail. It’s small and relaxed, with surf schools and seafood. Why go

Odeceixe is the most northerly village in the Algarve, but it feels nothing like the busy south coast. There are no big hotels, just a hillside of white houses, a few cafés and a wide green valley running down to the sea. It sits inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, so the coast around it is protected and wild. It suits families, surfers and walkers who want a slower few days.

The Seixe river marks the border itself. Cross the bridge just north of the village and you are in the Alentejo, in the municipality of Odemira. Odeceixe belongs to Aljezur.

Things to do

  • Praia de Odeceixe: a beach framed by cliffs, with the river on one side and the ocean on the other. Families with young children like the calm river water, while the ocean side has proper Atlantic waves. It’s about 3 to 4 km from the village. Plan on half a day or more. In 2012 it was voted one of the “7 Wonders” beaches of Portugal, in the cliff beach category.
  • The windmill: on the hill above the village, with views over the valley and the rooftops. It’s a short, steep walk from the centre. Allow half an hour. The mill has been restored and still grinds flour, and when the sails turn, the small clay pots tied to them whistle in the wind.
  • The village: whitewashed houses, a small square and cafés. An hour is enough to wander, longer if you stop for lunch.
  • Surfing: lessons for beginners on the ocean side. Local schools usually run classes from spring to autumn.
  • Hiking: the Fishermen’s Trail, part of the Rota Vicentina, runs north towards Zambujeira do Mar and south towards Aljezur. The stretch south along the clifftops to Rogil is a good half-day walk. See Costa Vicentina.
  • Kayaking on the river, a calm way to explore the valley.

The beach in more detail

The road from the village follows the river down the valley and ends at Odeceixe-Mar, a small cluster of houses and cafés on the hillside above the sand. A viewpoint at the top gives the classic view of the river curling round the beach into the sea. In the summer season, lifeguards watch the main beach.

Just south, below the cliffs, is Praia das Adegas, a small cove that is one of Portugal’s official naturist beaches. You can reach it along the sand at low tide, or at high tide by a steep path and wooden steps that drop down from near the viewpoint.

Getting there

  • By car: Odeceixe is on the N120, the main road up the west coast. It’s about 45 minutes from Lagos, 20 minutes from Aljezur and around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours from Lisbon.
  • By bus: Vamus Algarve runs a weekday route from Lagos via Aljezur, taking about 1 hour 15 minutes. Rede Expressos coaches also stop here on some routes along the west coast. Services are few, so check times on the operators’ websites before you go. See Portugal by bus.
  • Parking: easy in the village, but limited at the beach in summer.

How long to spend

A day trip from Lagos or Aljezur works well. For a simple day plan: walk up to the windmill in the morning, then head down to the beach. Swim in the river at low tide and watch the surfers on the ocean side. Have a late lunch of grilled fish, then walk a short stretch of the clifftop trail before sunset. Two or three nights give you time for a longer hike and a surf lesson.

Food

Expect simple seafood and Algarve and Alentejo cooking. Look for grilled fish, percebes (goose barnacles, gathered on this coast), polvo (octopus) and the local sweet potatoes from Aljezur, which are famous in Portugal. Cafés in the village do good coffee and pastries.

When to go

  • May, June and September: warm, quieter and good for walking and swimming.
  • July and August: the busiest months, with full car parks at the beach.
  • Mid-September: the village usually holds the Festa da Praia Maravilha, a weekend of music and beach sports celebrating the “7 Wonders” title. Check the dates locally.
  • Autumn to spring: some places close, but the walking is excellent. The Atlantic water stays cool all year.

Nearby

  • Aljezur: see Aljezur.
  • Vila Nova de Milfontes: see Milfontes.
  • Zambujeira do Mar: a clifftop village just north, in the Alentejo.
  • Carrapateira: wild surf beaches further south. See Carrapateira and Bordeira.

Tips

  • Tides: the river side is best at low to mid tide. Check a tide table before you go.
  • Parking: limited at the beach in summer. A shuttle sometimes runs from the village, or you can walk down the valley road.
  • Waves: swim on the ocean side only with lifeguards. Currents can be strong.
  • Wind: the west coast is often breezy in the afternoon. Bring a layer for the evening.
  • Surf camps: for longer surf stays on this coast, see surf camps in Portugal.
