Romantic Lisbon: Things to Do for Couples
Lisbon is one of Europe’s most romantic cities: golden sunsets over terracotta rooftops, candlelit fado taverns, sailing on the Tagus and long dinners in tiled restaurants. Here are the most romantic things to do in Lisbon, for honeymoons, anniversaries or a weekend for two.
Quick answer: watch the sunset from Senhora do Monte or Santa Luzia, take a sunset sail on the Tagus, hear fado by candlelight in Alfama, have a drink on a rooftop bar, wander Sintra’s fairy-tale palaces, and stay in a hotel with a view like Memmo Alfama or Verride.

Why Lisbon works for couples
Lisbon is compact, so you spend your time together rather than in taxis. The light is soft and golden for much of the year, and evenings are mild from spring to autumn. Dinner starts late and nobody hurries you out. Add a river, a dozen hilltop viewpoints and music that is all about longing, and it’s easy to see why so many couples choose it.
Romantic things to do
- Sunset at a miradouro: Senhora do Monte, Santa Luzia or Santa Catarina. See the best viewpoints.
- A sunset sail past Belém and under the bridge, with a glass of wine. See sunset sails.
- Fado in a candlelit Alfama tavern. See fado in Lisbon.
- Rooftop drinks with a view. See Lisbon rooftop bars.
- Get lost in Alfama together. See Alfama.
- A day in Sintra: palaces, gardens and misty forests. See Sintra in one day.
- Cascais at sunset: a train along the coast and dinner by the sea. See Cascais.
- A photo shoot with a local photographer. See photo tours.
- A food and wine tour or a pastel de nata baking class for two. See classes.
- The Gulbenkian garden on a quiet afternoon.
- A ferry across the Tagus: the short commuter ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas gives you the whole city skyline from the water, at a fraction of the price of a cruise.
- Príncipe Real: a leafy square with café tables and a huge old cypress whose branches are trained over a metal frame like a giant parasol. See Príncipe Real.
More about the highlights
- The viewpoints: Senhora do Monte is the highest of the classic miradouros, above Graça, with the castle and river in one view. Santa Luzia has tiles, bougainvillea and a pergola over Alfama’s roofs. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sunset to find a spot. See Graça.
- Getting up the hill: the Graça funicular, which reopened in April 2026, climbs from Rua dos Lagares in Mouraria to the Graça viewpoint, a short walk from Senhora do Monte. The Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars and the Santa Justa lift have been closed since the September 2025 accident, so don’t plan around them.
- The sail: sunset trips on the Tagus usually last about 2 hours. You pass the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries, then sail under the 25 de Abril Bridge as the sky turns pink. The Belém Tower reopened in May 2026 with timed entry, so book a slot if you want to go inside. See Lisbon sunset cruises.
- Fado: fado is sung in small rooms, often during dinner, and the room goes silent while the singer performs. Shows in the smaller houses tend to start after 8pm.
- Sintra and Cascais: trains from Rossio to Sintra and from Cais do Sodré to Cascais each take about 40 minutes, so either one makes an easy day out. Pena Palace tickets are for a set date and time, and private cars can’t drive up to Pena, so book ahead and use the bus or walk.
- The Gulbenkian garden: ponds, ducks and shady paths around the museum. The garden is free, usually open daily from sunrise to sunset, and much quieter than the city’s viewpoints.
A romantic day in Lisbon
- Morning: coffee and a pastel de nata, then wander Alfama before the crowds.
- Midday: the castle or the Santa Luzia viewpoint, then a long lunch.
- Afternoon: a rest at your hotel, or the Gulbenkian garden.
- Sunset: a sail on the Tagus or a drink on a rooftop.
- Night: dinner with fado in Alfama or Mouraria.
With a second day, take the train to Sintra in the morning, then come back for a late dinner in Príncipe Real or Chiado. See Lisbon at night.
Food and drink for two
Share a plate of petiscos, Portugal’s small dishes, with a bottle of vinho verde or an Alentejo red. Try grilled fish, clams in garlic and coriander, and a glass of port or ginjinha cherry liqueur to finish. See the ginjinha guide and the best pastel de nata in Lisbon.
Romantic places to stay
- Memmo Alfama: a terrace pool over the rooftops.
- Verride Palácio Santa Catarina: a 360° rooftop and river views.
- Santiago de Alfama: a palace near the castle.
- Torel Palace: mansions with a garden pool and views.
- Olissippo Lapa Palace: old-world luxury in gardens above the river.

When to go
Spring and autumn bring warm evenings without the summer crowds. In June, the Santo António festival takes over the old quarters. Saint Anthony is Lisbon’s matchmaker saint, couples give each other small pots of basil with love poems, and on 12 June the city holds a group wedding, the Casamentos de Santo António, at the cathedral and the city hall. See the Santo António festival. Winter is quieter and cheaper, with many sunny days, but evenings are cool for rooftops.
Tips
- Book sunset sails and fado dinners ahead, especially at weekends.
- Best seasons: spring and autumn for warm evenings without the crowds.
- Request a view room when booking.
- Pack flat shoes: heels and Lisbon’s steep cobbles don’t mix.
- Let the hotel know if it’s a honeymoon or anniversary when you book.
- Sunset picnic? Buy your wine early. Since February 2026, shops can’t sell alcohol to drink outside after 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, or after midnight on Friday and Saturday.
FAQ
Where is the most romantic sunset in Lisbon?
Senhora do Monte gives the widest view over the castle and river. Santa Luzia is prettier and closer to Alfama, and a sail on the Tagus puts you right under the bridge.
Is Lisbon good for a honeymoon?
Yes. It has palace hotels with views, fado dinners and easy day trips to Sintra and Cascais, and it pairs well with a few days in the Algarve or Madeira.
How many days do you need for a romantic break in Lisbon?
Three or four days is ideal: two or three in the city and one in Sintra. A long weekend still covers the viewpoints, a sail and a fado night.
