Praia da Marinha: Visiting the Algarve's Famous Beach

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

Praia da Marinha is regularly named one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. It’s a golden cove beneath ochre cliffs, with natural arches, sea stacks and clear water. It’s also the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail. Here’s how to visit.

Quick answer: Praia da Marinha is between Carvoeiro and Benagil in the central Algarve. Arrive early in summer, as the car park fills fast. A long ramp and steps lead down to the sand. Bring snorkel gear, water and shade, and see the famous double arch from the clifftop viewpoint.

Why go

Many Algarve beaches are pretty. Marinha is the one that ends up on the posters. The cliffs glow orange and gold, the water turns turquoise on sunny days, and the rock arches and stacks look carved on purpose. Because the area is protected, there are no hotels or apartment blocks on the clifftop, just a car park, a path and a small beach restaurant. That’s a big part of its appeal.

The beach is in the municipality of Lagoa, on a stretch of coast where soft limestone has been worn by the sea into caves, arches and pillars. The best-known shape is the “M” formed by two arches side by side, which you see from the viewpoint east of the car park.

What makes it special

  • The arches and stacks at the eastern end, best seen from the clifftop path. The view down onto the arches is the classic photo.
  • Clear water for swimming and snorkelling around the rocks on calm days. You often see small fish and crabs among the boulders.
  • Few buildings: it’s protected from development, with just a small beach restaurant.
  • Caves and grottos along the cliffs, which you can see from the water on a calm day.

The clifftop walk

From the car park, walk east along the clifftop for the viewpoints over the arches, or follow the trail west towards Benagil. It’s the start of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, which runs for about 5.7km one way to Praia de Vale Centianes, near Carvoeiro. Allow about two hours each way at a gentle pace, or just walk the first section to Benagil and back. The path is well marked, but it’s exposed with no shade, so go early or late in summer and keep away from the cliff edges. See the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.

Along the way you look down into the Benagil sea cave from above, through the hole in its roof. Since August 2024 you can’t swim to the cave or land on its beach, and kayaks may only go in with a licensed guide. Viewing it from the clifftop or from a boat is fine.

Getting there

  • By car: the easiest way. The beach is signposted off the main road between Lagoa and Armação de Pêra, and is usually 10 to 15 minutes from Carvoeiro, 20 to 25 minutes from Albufeira and about an hour from Faro. The free clifftop car park fills by mid-morning in summer. Don’t park on the verges. When the car park is full, the access road is sometimes closed, so arrive before about 10am in July and August.
  • Taxi or Uber from Carvoeiro, Armação de Pêra or Albufeira. Agree how you’ll get back, as there’s no taxi rank and phone signal can be patchy on the cliffs.
  • On foot: walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Benagil or Vale Centianes.
  • By boat: many Benagil boat trips pass the Marinha arches. See boat tours.
  • Public transport: there’s no handy bus to the beach itself. The nearest train station is Lagoa-Silves or Albufeira-Ferreiras, both a taxi ride away.

How long to spend

Allow two to three hours for the viewpoints, a swim and a drink. For a full half-day, arrive at 9am, walk the clifftop to the arch viewpoints, then head down to the beach for a swim before the crowds peak. Add the walk to Benagil and lunch there if you have the energy, then come back for golden hour.

For a full day in the area, combine Marinha with a morning boat trip from Benagil, lunch in Carvoeiro and a late swim at Praia da Albandeira, a small cove a few minutes’ drive east. See Carvoeiro.

Food

The beach restaurant serves grilled fish, salads and snacks, and is usually open in the warmer months. For more choice, eat in Benagil, Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra. Look for grilled sardines in summer, cataplana (a seafood stew cooked in a copper pan) and clams cooked with garlic and coriander. See cataplana in the Algarve.

When to go

July and August are hot and busy, so come early. May, June and September usually bring warm weather, fewer people and easier parking. In winter the beach is quiet and the light is lovely for walks, though the sea is cold and the restaurant may be closed. Spring is also good for the clifftop walk, when wild flowers cover the headlands.

Tips

  • Tide: at high tide the beach shrinks, and the rocks at the ends are cut off.
  • Access: the way down is steep in places, so it’s tricky with buggies or limited mobility.
  • Shade: there’s little natural shade, so bring an umbrella.
  • Rockfalls: don’t sit right under the cliffs.
  • Best time: morning for calm water, and golden hour for photos.
  • Footwear: water shoes help on the rocks when snorkelling, and trainers are better than flip-flops on the clifftop path.
  • Drones: flying is restricted along much of this coast, so check the rules before you launch one.

FAQ

Is parking at Praia da Marinha free?

Yes, the clifftop car park is free, but it’s small for the number of visitors and fills by mid-morning in summer. Arrive early, or come by taxi or on foot along the coastal trail.

Can you walk from Praia da Marinha to Benagil?

Yes. The Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs west along the clifftop to Benagil, a walk of roughly an hour, and continues to Vale Centianes near Carvoeiro, about 6km in total.

Is Praia da Marinha good for swimming?

On calm days, yes. The water is clear and good for snorkelling around the rocks. Check the flags, as there can be swell, and remember the sea is fresh even in summer.

Can you see Benagil cave from Praia da Marinha?

Not from the beach itself, but you can walk the clifftop trail to look down into the cave, or take a boat trip from Benagil. Swimming to the cave has been banned since 2024.
