Figueira da Foz: Huge Beaches Near Coimbra

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

Figueira da Foz is a classic Portuguese seaside resort at the mouth of the Mondego river, with one of the widest beaches in Europe, a casino, a long promenade and the green hills of Serra da Boa Viagem just north. It’s popular with Portuguese families, and close to Coimbra.

Quick answer: Figueira is about 45 minutes west of Coimbra and 2 hours from Lisbon or Porto. Enjoy the huge Praia da Claridade, walk the promenade, drive to the viewpoints of Serra da Boa Viagem, and surf at Buarcos and Cabedelo. See places to stay in Figueira da Foz.

Why go

Figueira has been a beach resort since the 19th century, and it still has the feel of an old-fashioned Portuguese holiday town: a grand casino, a seafront clock tower and a promenade full of families in summer. The main beach is enormous, the surf is good, and wooded hills with sea views are only a few minutes’ drive away. It is also an easy break from Coimbra, which is close enough for a day trip either way.

Things to do

  • Praia da Claridade: a vast sandy beach, so wide you need a boardwalk to reach the water. It is often described as the widest urban beach in Europe. The Relógio clock tower on the seafront is the classic meeting point.
  • The promenade: a flat walk of a few kilometres from the town beach north to Buarcos. Lovely at sunset, and good for cycling.
  • Fort of Santa Catarina: a small fort at the river mouth, a quick stop at the south end of the beach. It was built in the 16th century against pirate raids. In 1808 a group of Coimbra students took it back from Napoleon’s troops, and weeks later British forces under Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, landed on the coast just south of the river.
  • Buarcos: an old fishing village at the north end of the bay. Parts of its late 16th and early 17th-century fortress walls, built against pirates, still stand by the sea. It is a good place for a seafood lunch.
  • Serra da Boa Viagem: forested hills just north of town with viewpoints over the coast and the bay. Allow 1 to 2 hours by car with stops, or longer if you walk the trails.
  • Cabo Mondego: the headland beyond Buarcos, a Natural Monument known for Jurassic rock layers and dinosaur footprints, with a lighthouse. The footprints, left by a large meat-eating dinosaur around 159 million years ago, were first recorded here in 1884.
  • Surfing: Cabedelo, south of the river mouth, is a well-known surf spot that has hosted international contests. Buarcos also has waves. See surfing in Portugal.
  • Palácio Sotto Mayor: an ornate early 20th-century mansion in town, owned by the casino. It usually opens for guided visits only in the summer months, so check opening times before you go.
  • Municipal museum: the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha, founded in 1894, has archaeology and local history collections, including dinosaur fossils from Cabo Mondego. A good rainy-day option.
  • The casino: Casino Figueira dates from the 1880s and is one of the oldest in Portugal, with shows as well as gaming.

Getting there

  • By car: about 45 minutes from Coimbra on the A14, and around 2 hours from Lisbon or Porto on the A1 and A17. The A1 is a toll motorway. See driving in Portugal.
  • By train: CP urban and regional trains run between Coimbra-B and Figueira da Foz through most of the day, and the trip takes roughly an hour. Coimbra-A station closed in January 2025, so trains start at Coimbra-B. From Lisbon or Porto, take a fast train to Coimbra-B and change there. The Oeste line south of Caldas da Rainha has had no trains since the January 2026 storm, so it is not a practical route from Lisbon. See the Portugal train guide.
  • By bus: Rede Expressos and FlixBus link Figueira with Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. Lisbon takes around 2.5 hours and Porto around 2 hours. Check current timetables.
  • Parking: there are large car parks behind the beach, but the seafront gets very busy on summer weekends.

How long to spend

A day trip from Coimbra is enough to see the beach, Buarcos and the hills. Stay two or three nights if you want beach time or a surf lesson.

A one-day plan

  • Morning: walk out across the sand of Praia da Claridade and swim.
  • Lunch: grilled fish in Buarcos.
  • Afternoon: drive up to the Serra da Boa Viagem viewpoints and Cabo Mondego.
  • Evening: stroll the promenade back to the clock tower.

Food

Seafood is the focus: grilled sardines, fish stews (caldeirada), rice with seafood and fresh clams. Coimbra’s region is also known for roast suckling pig (leitão) from Bairrada, a short drive away. See Portuguese sardines.

When to go

  • June: the city festivals for São João run through much of June, peaking on the night of 23 June. 24 June is the local holiday. In 2026 the programme ran from 8 to 24 June, opening with a sardine festival and ending with concerts, street parties and fireworks.
  • July and August: busy with Portuguese holidaymakers. The Atlantic stays cool, and fog sometimes rolls in.
  • Autumn to spring: quiet, with the best surf from autumn into spring.

Practical tips

  • Bring shoes: the sand gets very hot on the long walk to the water.
  • Swim safely: Atlantic currents can be strong. Swim where lifeguards are on duty.
  • Layers: evenings can be cool even in summer.
