Things to Do in Albufeira: Old Town, Beaches and Boat Trips
Albufeira is the Algarve’s busiest resort, but there’s more to it than the Strip: a pretty whitewashed old town, a fishermen’s beach, a colourful marina and some of the region’s best beaches nearby. Here are the best things to do in Albufeira, for families, couples and groups.
Quick answer: wander the old town and Praia dos Pescadores, ride the Penéco beach lift, take a boat trip from the marina to Benagil or to see dolphins, spend a day at Zoomarine or a water park, and hit Praia da Falésia. Party on the Strip if that’s your thing, but note the local rules on drinking in the street and wearing swimwear in town.

Why go
Albufeira sits in the middle of the Algarve coast, so beaches, water parks, golf and boat trips are all close by. It has the widest choice of hotels and apartments in the region, and plenty to do in the evening. If you want a quiet village feel, stay in one of the beach areas outside the centre and come into town for dinner.
In town
The old town
Whitewashed lanes, little squares and church towers above the sea. Albufeira was a Moorish town, and its name comes from Arabic. The main square, Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, is the heart of the evening, and the lanes are lovely after dark when the restaurants fill up. An hour or two is enough to wander it.
Praia dos Pescadores and Penéco
The town’s two central beaches. Pescadores (“fishermen’s beach”) is big and lively. The fishing fleet moved to the marina years ago, but the beach keeps its name and you may still spot a few boats on the sand. Penéco is reached by a tunnel or the free 28m lift down the cliff from the old town. The lift usually runs from about 9am to 9pm and gives a great view along the coast.
Albufeira Marina
Pastel-coloured buildings around the harbour, restaurants and the departure point for boat trips. A short walk or taxi from the centre.
The Strip
Avenida Sá Carneiro in Montechoro is lined with bars and clubs and busy late into the night in summer. New town rules from the start of summer 2026 mean bars must close by 3am, clubs by 5am, and minimarkets and off-licences by 11pm. Parts of the street are usually closed to traffic at night in summer. Albufeira’s code of conduct sets fines of €300 to €1,500 for drinking alcohol in the street and for wearing swimwear away from the beach, so keep it on the beach.
Beaches
- Praia da Falésia: kilometres of sand under red and orange cliffs, east of town. Great for long walks.
- São Rafael: golden sand and rock stacks, one of the prettiest.
- Praia da Coelha: a small, sheltered cove.
- Praia da Oura and Santa Eulália: family-friendly beaches with facilities.

Boat trips
From the marina, trips head west to the sea caves and Benagil, or out to look for dolphins. Dolphin trips usually last two to two and a half hours and cost from about €35. Benagil can only be visited by licensed boat or guided kayak, with no swimming to the cave and no landing on its beach. Morning trips usually have the calmest sea. Family days out
- Zoomarine (Guia): dolphins, sea lions, rides and pools. Open from March into the autumn, with the new Nautilus roller coaster in 2026. Plan a full day. See tickets.
- Water parks: Slide & Splash (Lagoa), Aquashow (Quarteira) and Aqualand nearby. See water park tickets.
- Paderne castle: Moorish ruins on a hill in the countryside, 15 minutes inland. The walk up and the views are free, but the inside only opens on set days, so check before you go.

A one-day plan
- Morning: a boat trip from the marina to the sea caves.
- Midday: lunch in the old town, then down the Penéco lift for a swim.
- Afternoon: drive or take a taxi to Praia da Falésia for a long beach walk.
- Evening: dinner in the old town, and the Strip later if you want a big night.
Getting there
- From Faro airport: about 40 minutes by car or transfer. See Faro airport to Albufeira.
- Train: Albufeira-Ferreiras station is on the Algarve line, about 6km north of town. Local Giro buses take about 25 minutes to the bus station, or take a taxi. Intercidades trains from Lisbon stop there too.
- Bus: Rede Expressos and FlixBus run from Lisbon in about 2 hours 45 minutes, arriving at the bus station on the edge of town.
- Car: the A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. Parking in the old town is limited, so use the paid car parks above the centre.
Food
Try grilled sardines and fish of the day, cataplana (a seafood stew cooked in a copper pan), and the famous piri-piri chicken in Guia, just inland. For dessert, look for Algarve sweets made with almonds, figs and carob.
When to go
- June and September: warm sea, long days and fewer people than peak season.
- July and August: hot, very busy and the liveliest time for nightlife.
- Winter: mild and quiet, good for walks and golf, but some bars and attractions close.
Events
- Mid-August: the festival of Nossa Senhora da Orada, the fishermen’s patron, ends with a procession of boats from the marina (14 August in 2026).
- New Year’s Eve: a free party and fireworks over Praia dos Pescadores.
Practical tips
- Cover up in town: the swimwear rule is enforced.
- The old town is hilly: the lift and the tunnel save a climb.
- Late-night shopping: buy water, snacks and drinks before 11pm, when minimarkets and off-licences close.
- Use Uber or Bolt to get between the beaches, the marina and the Strip at night.
