Lagos vs Tavira: West or East Algarve?
Lagos and Tavira sit at opposite ends of the Algarve, and they offer two different holidays. Lagos has golden cliffs, coves and a lively scene. Tavira has elegant architecture, calm lagoons and long island beaches with a slower, more traditional pace. Here’s how to choose.
Quick answer: choose Lagos (west) for dramatic cliffs and coves, boat and kayak trips, surfing nearby and nightlife. Choose Tavira (east) for a beautiful historic town, warmer and calmer sea, long sandy island beaches, a quieter pace and easy day trips to Seville.

Side by side
- Scenery: Lagos has ochre cliffs, sea stacks and grottos. Tavira has lagoons, salt pans and barrier islands.
- Beaches: Lagos has coves and the long Meia Praia. Tavira’s beaches are on islands reached by ferry or footbridge, with lots of space.
- Sea: the water is usually a little warmer and calmer in the east.
- Town: both are historic. Tavira is quieter and more traditional, while Lagos is livelier.
- Nightlife: Lagos has more. Tavira is low-key.
- Day trips: from Lagos, Sagres and the west coast. From Tavira, Olhão, the Ria Formosa and Seville.
- Airport: Tavira is about 30 to 40 minutes’ drive from Faro airport. Lagos is further, at about an hour.
Lagos in more detail
Lagos is a walled old town on the western Algarve, busy with restaurants, bars and boat-trip kiosks along the riverfront. In the 15th century, ships sailed from here to explore the coast of Africa. Its big draw today is the coast just south of town. See things to do in Lagos.
- Ponta da Piedade: a headland of golden rock arches, pillars and grottos. You can walk the clifftop paths or see it from the water by small boat or kayak. See Ponta da Piedade.
- Beaches: small coves such as Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, and the long, open Meia Praia across the river. The coves are reached by steps and fill up fast in summer, so go early.
- Old town: the town walls, the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira by the harbour mouth (closed for repairs, so admire it from outside), and the old slave market building, now a small museum about the slave trade.
- Nearby: the surf beaches and fortress at Sagres, and the wild west coast.
Lagos suits couples, friends and active travellers. It gets very busy in July and August.
Tavira in more detail
Tavira is a riverside town on the Gilão, with a castle, many churches, tiled houses with distinctive hipped roofs, and an old bridge in the centre. It feels more like a working Portuguese town than a resort. See Tavira and the eastern Algarve.
- The castle and old town: climb to the castle garden for views over the rooftops, then wander down to the riverside squares.
- Ilha de Tavira: a long barrier-island beach reached by ferry. Boats from the Quatro Águas pier, about 20 minutes’ walk east of the centre, run for most of the year and take about 10 minutes. From spring to autumn, boats also leave from the riverside in town, a crossing of about 20 minutes. A return ticket usually costs only a couple of euros.
- Praia do Barril: reached from Pedras d’El Rei by a footbridge and a walk of about 1.3 km across the lagoon, or by the small train when it is running. Its “anchor cemetery” of old tuna-fishing anchors sits in the dunes.
- Ria Formosa: salt pans, lagoons and birdlife, including flamingos at times. See the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Tavira suits families, older travellers and anyone who wants a slower pace.
Getting there
- From Faro: trains from Faro station reach Tavira in about 35 minutes and Lagos in about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- From Lisbon: allow about three hours by car to either town, on the A2 and then the A22. The A2 is tolled, but the A22 has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. See Portugal tolls explained.
- By coach or train from Lisbon: Rede Expressos and FlixBus coaches serve both towns. By rail, take a CP train to Faro or Tunes and change to the regional line.
Food
Both towns serve excellent seafood: grilled sardines and fish, clams, octopus and cataplana, the Algarve’s copper-pot seafood stew. Tavira is known for tuna, a reminder of its old tuna fishery, and for octopus from nearby Santa Luzia. For dessert, try Dom Rodrigo, an Algarve sweet of egg threads and almond wrapped in coloured foil.
When to go
Both are best from May to October for the beaches. Spring and autumn are quieter and still warm. In winter, Tavira stays calm and pleasant for walking, while Lagos is quieter than in summer but still has plenty open.
- June: the Santos Populares street parties. Tavira’s town holiday is 24 June, the feast of São João.
- 29 August: Lagos holds the Banho 29, an old tradition with music and a midnight swim at Meia Praia and Praia da Luz.
- 27 October: Lagos’s town holiday, for its patron saint, São Gonçalo.

Do both
Since July 2026, the whole Algarve line has been electric, and many trains now run straight through from Lagos to Tavira without a change at Faro. The trip takes about 2 hours 10 minutes, but trains on the Lagos side run only about every two hours. By car it is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes on the toll-free A22. With a week, you could spend three or four nights in each. See the 7-day Algarve itinerary and getting around the Algarve.
FAQ
Is Lagos or Tavira better for families?
Tavira often suits young children better, with calm water and wide island beaches. Lagos has family-friendly Meia Praia, but many of its coves involve steps.
Is there a direct train between Lagos and Tavira?
Yes. Since July 2026, many trains run straight through, taking about 2 hours 10 minutes. Some still need a change at Faro, so check the CP timetable.
Do you need a car in Lagos or Tavira?
Not for the towns, which are walkable and on the railway. A car helps for the west coast beyond Lagos or the villages inland from Tavira.
Which has the warmer sea?
The east is usually a little warmer and calmer, so Tavira has the edge. The water off Lagos is cooler, especially early in the season.
