Where to Stay in Vilamoura
Vilamoura is the Algarve’s upmarket marina resort, built around a large yacht harbour and surrounded by golf courses. With neighbouring Quarteira and the exclusive Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago nearby, it suits golfers, families and anyone who wants polished resort living close to Faro airport.
Quick answer: stay by the marina for restaurants and nightlife, near Falésia beach for sand and sea views, in Quarteira for a cheaper, more Portuguese town, or at Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago for luxury and golf. Faro airport is about 25 minutes away. See places to stay in Vilamoura.

Why stay in Vilamoura
Vilamoura is a planned resort rather than an old town. That means wide roads, plenty of parking, modern hotels and apartments, and everything organised around the marina, the beaches and the golf. It is easy, safe and well kept. The trade-off is less traditional character, which you can find a few minutes away in Quarteira or inland in Loulé. It is a short hop from Faro airport, so it works well for a long weekend.
Vilamoura is also spread out. The marina, the beaches, the golf areas and Quarteira are all a few kilometres apart, so where you stay decides whether you walk everywhere or drive. Pick your area first, then your hotel.
Which area suits you?
- Couples and groups of friends: the marina.
- Families who want the beach on the doorstep: Falésia and the eastern beaches.
- Golfers: the golf areas, or Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago.
- Budget travellers and long stays: Quarteira.
- A splurge: Quinta do Lago.
The best areas
The marina
Restaurants, bars, boat trips and the casino. Lively in summer and busy until late. Expect hotels and apartments with pool access, many within walking distance of the main beach (Praia da Marina). Best for couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants to walk to dinner. Two big resorts a short drive or long walk from the marina are Victoria Golf Resort & Spa (formerly Anantara Vilamoura, now run by Accor), set inland beside the golf courses, and Domes Lake Algarve, popular with families and built around its own lake, about ten minutes’ walk from the marina and Falésia beach.
Falésia and the eastern beaches
East of the marina, the long sandy beach runs towards the red and ochre cliffs of Falésia. Stays here are mostly larger resort hotels and apartment complexes, often with direct beach paths. It is quieter than the marina and suits families and beach lovers. See Praia da Falésia.
The beach stretches for several kilometres, so even in August you can walk away from the busiest spots. Many of the cliff-top hotels reach the sand by long staircases or paths, so check access if anyone in your group has trouble with steps.
The golf areas
Inland from the marina, around the Vilamoura golf courses, you find villas, townhouses and golf hotels set among greens and pine trees. You need a car or taxis to reach the beach and restaurants. Ideal for golfers and families who want a private pool.
Quarteira
A real Portuguese town next door, with a long beach promenade, a fish market and lower prices. Expect apartment blocks, simple hotels and holiday flats. It suits budget travellers and anyone who wants local cafés, and you can walk or cycle to the marina along the seafront. See places to stay in Quarteira. See also Quarteira.
Quarteira’s big weekly street market, usually on Wednesday mornings, is worth a look. See Algarve markets.
Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago
Exclusive resorts with villas, golf and beaches, near the Ria Formosa. Expect luxury villas, high-end apartments and five-star hotels. Best for a splurge or a golf holiday. Try the Conrad Algarve at Quinta do Lago. See places to stay in Vale do Lobo.
These estates are about 15 to 20 minutes’ drive east of Vilamoura and closer to Faro airport. They feel private and green, with lakes, pine woods and boardwalks to the beach, but you will need a car or taxis for almost everything.
Types of accommodation
- Resort hotels: pools, spas and kids’ facilities. Good for short stays.
- Apartment hotels: hotel services with a kitchen. Popular with families.
- Villas: private pools, often near the golf courses. Usually rented by the week in summer.
- Holiday flats in Quarteira: the best value for longer stays.
Getting there and around
- From Faro airport: about 25 minutes by taxi or transfer. There are also regional buses via Faro and Quarteira, which take longer. See Faro airport to Vilamoura.
- No train: the nearest station is Loulé, several kilometres inland, so most people use taxis, buses or a hire car.
- Around town: the marina and beaches are walkable, and the flat streets suit bikes. For villas and golf areas, a car helps.
- By car: the A22 motorway runs just inland and has been toll-free since January 2025. See driving in Portugal.
Things to do
- Golf: several courses around Vilamoura. See Algarve golf courses.
- Boat trips from the marina, including dolphin watching and coastal cruises. See Algarve boat trips.
- Cerro da Vila: Roman ruins and a small museum by the marina, with mosaics, remains of baths and finds such as amphorae. Opening days are limited and have changed over the years, so check before you go.
- Loulé: the market town inland, with a Saturday market. See Loulé.
When to go
- July and August: hot, busy and at peak prices. Book well ahead.
- Spring and autumn: warm, quieter and the best time for golf.
- Winter: mild and good value, with many golfers, though some beach bars close.
