The Best Algarve Beaches, Area by Area

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 9 October 2026

The Algarve has some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches: golden cliffs, sea caves, sandy islands and wild Atlantic surf. With more than 100 to choose from, here are the ones our members rave about, grouped by area so you can plan around where you’re staying.

Quick answer: for the postcard golden-cliff beaches, base yourself between Lagos and Albufeira. For long sandy beaches and calm water with kids, head east to Tavira. For wild, uncrowded surf beaches, drive to the west coast.

How the Algarve coast works

The Algarve’s south coast runs for about 150km from Sagres in the west to the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António. It splits into three very different stretches, so pick your base by the beach you want.

  • West of Faro (Lagos to Albufeira): golden limestone cliffs, coves, arches and sea caves. The most photographed beaches, but often small and busy.
  • East of Faro (Olhão to the border): long, flat sand islands in the Ria Formosa lagoon, reached by ferry or footbridge. Warmer, calmer water.
  • The west coast: north of Sagres, the coast faces the open Atlantic. Big beaches, cold water and surf.

Central Algarve (Portimão, Lagoa, Carvoeiro, Albufeira)

Praia da Marinha

Often named one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe: honey-coloured cliffs, rock arches and clear water. It’s reached by a set of steps from the clifftop car park, which fills early in summer. Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from here towards Benagil for some of the best coastal views in Portugal.

The trail is about 5.7km one way between Praia da Marinha and Vale Centeanes, and most people take two to three hours with photo stops. There is little shade, so start early in summer and carry water. More in our Praia da Marinha guide.

Praia de Benagil

A small beach in a fishing village, famous as the launch point for boat and kayak trips to the Benagil sea cave. Note that you can no longer swim or land inside the cave. Read our Benagil Cave guide before you go.

Since August 2024, kayaks and paddleboards may only enter the cave with a licensed guide, and boats only pass through for a look. The village has very little parking and the road is narrow, so arrive before 9am in summer or come on a boat trip from Portimão, Carvoeiro or Armação de Pêra.

Praia do Carvoeiro

A pretty village beach surrounded by whitewashed houses, with cafés and restaurants right on the sand. Easy with kids.

Praia da Falésia

Kilometres of sand backed by red and orange cliffs between Albufeira and Vilamoura. Plenty of room even in August, and great for long walks.

The beach runs for about 6km, with several access points and car parks along the clifftop. The pine-topped cliffs glow at sunset, so stay for the evening light.

Praia de São Rafael

Just west of Albufeira, with dramatic rock stacks, small coves and good snorkelling on calm days.

Praia da Rocha

Portimão’s big town beach: a wide strip of sand below the cliffs, lined with hotels, bars and a long promenade. Not quiet, but easy, with lots of space and sunbeds.

Western Algarve (Lagos and around)

Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo

Two of the Algarve’s most photographed beaches, a short walk from Lagos. Note: land access to Camilo, including its famous wooden staircase, has been closed since storm damage in winter 2025–26, so you can only admire it from the clifftop or a boat. Dona Ana is small and busy in summer, so go early. Nearby, Ponta da Piedade has spectacular rock formations, best seen by boat or kayak.

Boat and kayak trips to Ponta da Piedade leave from Lagos marina and the riverfront and usually last about 60 to 90 minutes. The sea is calmest in the morning.

Meia Praia

A huge, flat sandy beach on the other side of Lagos. Lots of space, beach bars and gentle water: a good family choice.

Praia da Luz, Burgau and Salema

Fishing villages west of Lagos with smaller, quieter beaches. Luz has a long promenade and a big sandy bay, while Burgau and Salema still have fishing boats pulled up on the sand. See Salema and Burgau.

Eastern Algarve (Tavira and around)

Ilha de Tavira

A long sand-bar island reached by a short ferry from Tavira. Miles of soft sand, warmer and calmer water than the west, and fewer cliffs. Great with children.

Ferries run all year from Quatro Águas, about 2km east of the town centre, and in summer also from the riverside in Tavira itself. Check the last boat back, as you don’t want to be stranded.

Praia do Barril

Reached on foot or by a little train across the lagoon. It’s known for the “anchor cemetery”, rows of old tuna-fishing anchors in the dunes.

The train and the footpath both start at Pedras d’El Rei, west of Tavira, and the walk over the lagoon is just over 1km.

Ilha Deserta

An empty barrier island off Faro, reached only by boat from the city’s marina. Kilometres of sand, a boardwalk and a single restaurant. See Ilha Deserta.

Places to stay in Tavira

West coast (Costa Vicentina)

Praia do Amado, Bordeira and Odeceixe

Wild, wide and beautiful beaches in a protected natural park, popular with surfers. The water is colder and the waves bigger, so swim only where it’s safe and lifeguarded. You’ll need a car.

Amado has several surf schools on the sand, Bordeira is a huge beach with dunes and a lagoon, and Odeceixe sits where a river meets the sea, so children can paddle in calmer water on the river side. All three are about 30 to 60 minutes’ drive from Lagos.

Tips from our groups

  • Go early in July and August. Car parks at the famous beaches fill by mid-morning.
  • Respect the flags. Red means no swimming, yellow means paddling only. Atlantic currents can be strong.
  • Watch the cliffs. Don’t sit right underneath them. Rockfalls do happen.
  • Bring water shoes for rocky coves.
  • Hire a car to beach-hop. The A22 motorway has been toll-free since January 2025. See our car rental guide.
  • Kids: Meia Praia, Falésia, Carvoeiro and Ilha de Tavira are the easiest family beaches.
  • Lifeguards work mainly in the official bathing season, usually from June to September. Outside it, most beaches have none.
  • Check the tide for coves and rock arches. Some small beaches almost disappear at high tide.
  • Sea temperature: about 17 to 18°C in May and up to 21 to 23°C in August and September on the south coast. The west coast stays a few degrees colder.

Getting there

Flying into Faro? See our Faro airport guide. For boat trips, kayaking and caves, browse Algarve tours, and for somewhere to stay, browse Algarve stays.

Without a car, the Algarve railway line links Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira (the station is a few kilometres inland), Faro, Olhão and Tavira, with electric trains on the whole line since July 2026. Local buses and taxis cover the last stretch to most beaches.
