The Best Porto Hotels With a View
Porto’s view is one of the best in Europe: the pastel houses of the Ribeira stacked above the Douro, the great iron bridge, and the port lodges of Gaia across the water. These are the best hotels in Porto for a view, whether you want a riverside room in the heart of the action or the full panorama from across the river.
Quick answer: for the ultimate view of Porto, stay across the river at The Yeatman in Gaia. To wake up on the Ribeira, the Pestana Vintage Porto or Hotel Carris Porto Ribeira. For a pool above the river, Torel Avantgarde. For river views on a mid-range budget, NEYA Porto. Always book a “river view” room type.

Which side of the river?
The view you get depends on where you sleep. From Gaia, on the south bank, you look across at the whole of old Porto: the Ribeira, the cathedral and the Dom Luís I bridge. From the Ribeira, you look back at the port lodges and their rooftop signs, and you can walk out of the door into the old town. Miragaia, just west, is quieter, with views down the river towards the sea and the best sunsets.
- Best for the classic postcard view: Gaia.
- Best for walking everywhere: the Ribeira.
- Best for sunsets and quiet nights: Miragaia.
Gaia: the panorama
1. The Yeatman
The view of Porto: a luxury wine hotel on the hill in Vila Nova de Gaia, with terraces, a decanter-shaped infinity pool and almost every room facing the Ribeira across the river. Its restaurant holds two Michelin stars. A once-in-a-lifetime stay. Check prices at The Yeatman
It sits among the port lodges, so you can walk down to cellar tastings, though the walk back up is steep. Crossing to the Ribeira on foot takes about 15 to 20 minutes over the bridge’s lower deck. Good for: special occasions, wine lovers and anyone who wants the view without the noise.

The Ribeira: on the river
2. Pestana Vintage Porto
Right on Ribeira Square in a row of historic buildings, with many rooms looking straight over the river and the bridge. You can’t be more central. Check prices at Pestana Vintage Porto
Restaurants, boat trips and the riverside walk are on the doorstep. The trade-off is the crowds and the noise on summer evenings. Good for: first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of it all.
3. Hotel Carris Porto Ribeira
A stylish four-star in restored buildings just above the river, with some rooms and its restaurant overlooking the Douro. Great value for the location. Check prices at Carris Porto Ribeira
Only some rooms face the water, so check the room type carefully. Good for: couples who want a Ribeira base without paying top prices.
Above the river
4. Torel Avantgarde
An art-themed boutique hotel on the hillside above the river, with a pool terrace looking down the Douro towards the sea. Wonderful at sunset. Check prices at Torel Avantgarde
Each room is themed on an avant-garde artist or writer, and the bold design won’t suit everyone. The hill is steep, so you’ll take taxis more often. Good for: design lovers and sunset drinks by the pool.
5. NEYA Porto Hotel
A modern, eco-minded four-star in Miragaia, by the river west of the Ribeira, with river-view rooms and a rooftop. Easy walk along the river into the centre. Check prices at NEYA Porto
It opened in 2020 in the restored ruins of the old Madre de Deus de Monchique convent, keeping its garden cloisters, and some suites are themed on Portuguese brands such as Vista Alegre porcelain and Amorim cork. Good for: a river view on a mid-range budget. See Miragaia.
City views
6. InterContinental Porto Palácio das Cardosas
An 18th-century palace on Praça da Liberdade, at the foot of Avenida dos Aliados, with views over Porto’s grand central avenue and rooftops (not the river). Classic, central luxury. Check prices at the InterContinental
São Bento station is next door, which makes it handy for day trips by train. Good for: a classic luxury stay with easy transport.
7. The One Monumental Palace
A belle époque landmark on Aliados, formerly Le Monumental Palace (Maison Albar) and now run by H10 Hotels. Grand interiors and avenue views. Check prices at The One Monumental Palace
The 1923 building once housed the Café Monumental, where Porto society met in the 1930s and 1940s. It has a spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant, Le Monument. Good for: old-world glamour in the city centre.
Booking tips
- Book the view: choose a room type that says “river view”. Standard rooms in Ribeira hotels often face the back lanes.
- Book early for June: prices peak around the São João festival on the night of 23 June, when the riverside is packed.
- Noise: riverside rooms in the Ribeira can be lively until late. Light sleepers might prefer Gaia or Miragaia.
- Hills: Porto is steep. Check taxi access if you have heavy bags. Cars can no longer cross the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, so taxis between Gaia and the Ribeira go the long way round.
- Not staying? Have a drink on a riverside terrace in Gaia at sunset for the same view.
- Tourist tax: Porto charges €3 per person per night (from age 13, up to seven nights), paid at the hotel. The council is reviewing the rate, so it may rise. Gaia has its own tax, which rose to €3 on 21 August 2026, the same as Porto.
FAQ
Which side of the river has the best view of Porto?
Gaia, on the south bank. From there you look straight across at the Ribeira, the cathedral and the Dom Luís I bridge. From the Ribeira you see the port lodges instead.
Is it better to stay in Gaia or in Porto?
Stay in Gaia for the view and quieter nights. Stay in the Ribeira or near São Bento if you want to walk everywhere, as most sights and restaurants are on the Porto side.
Which Porto hotels have a pool with a view?
The Yeatman has an infinity pool facing Porto across the river, and Torel Avantgarde has an outdoor pool looking down the Douro towards the sea.
Is a river-view room worth the extra cost?
For a short stay, yes. The view is the reason to choose these hotels, and standard rooms often look onto back streets or courtyards.
