Praia Dona Ana, Lagos: Stairs, Parking and Best Time to Go
Praia Dona Ana is the Lagos cove most people picture: honey-coloured cliffs, rock stacks standing in clear green water and a strip of sand at the foot of a long staircase. It sits about 2km south of the old town, on the clifftop walk to Ponta da Piedade. Here’s how to get there, where to park and when to go.
Quick answer: Praia Dona Ana is a 20 to 30-minute walk south of Lagos old town. A staircase of about 100 steps leads down to the sand, and the small car park on top holds about 70 cars, so walk or arrive early in summer. There are lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September (the 2026 season), a beach restaurant and sunbeds to hire. It did not fly a Blue Flag in 2026.

Why go
Dona Ana is the classic Lagos cove, with sea stacks and small arches just offshore and green, turquoise water on calm days. It’s small, but it has more facilities than most coves nearby: a restaurant, sunbeds and lifeguards in summer. It’s also easy to reach on foot from town, on the coastal path to Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade.
What makes it special
- The rock stacks: limestone pillars split the shore into several sandy inlets, with the main stretch at the bottom of the stairs.
- Clear water: the cliffs shelter the cove, so the sea is often calm enough for snorkelling around the rocks.
- The view from the top: the clifftop above the stairs looks straight down over the stacks. See the best Algarve photo spots.
The sand was topped up
In 2015 the environment agency (APA) pumped about 150,000 cubic metres of sand from the seabed onto the beach, at a cost of about €1.8 million. The first autumn rains carried much of it away. Expect the beach to look different from older photos, and to change shape after winter storms.
The stairs
A staircase of about 100 steps runs down the cliff from the road and car park to the sand. It’s steep in places, so take it slowly, and allow for the climb back up in the heat. With a buggy or limited mobility it’s hard going; for flat access, choose Meia Praia on the other side of town.
In the bathing season, from 9am to 7pm, you can’t carry surfboards, kayaks or diving gear down the Dona Ana or Camilo stairs, or leave that kind of kit on the sand. Fines for individuals run from €55 to €550.
Getting there
- On foot from the old town: about 2km, or 20 to 30 minutes. Walk south along the Avenida dos Descobrimentos past the small fort and Praia da Batata, then follow the coast road or clifftop paths past Praia do Pinhão. The last part is uphill.
- Taxi or Uber: a short ride from the centre.
- Town bus: Lagos’s A Onda buses have served Dona Ana from the centre, roughly hourly in past summers. Check the current line and times locally.
- To Lagos: by train from Lisbon with a change at Tunes (see Lisbon to Lagos), or about an hour by car from Faro airport (see Faro airport to Lagos).
Parking
The car park at the top of the stairs holds about 70 cars. In July and August it fills early, so arrive before mid-morning or walk from town, and check the signs for any charges. If it’s full, the Camilo turn-off further along the Ponta da Piedade road has a car park for about 56 cars, a short walk away along the clifftop.
The clifftop walk to Camilo and Ponta da Piedade
A clifftop path and boardwalk run south from Dona Ana to Praia do Camilo and on to the lighthouse at Ponta da Piedade. It’s an easy walk of about 30 to 40 minutes. Stay on the marked paths and keep back from the edges, which can crumble.
Camilo’s wooden staircase has been closed since storm damage in winter 2025 to 2026. Funding to rebuild the access was agreed in October 2026, but no reopening date has been given, so admire it from the top. See Praia do Camilo and the Ponta da Piedade guide.
Facilities
- Lifeguards: on duty during the official bathing season, which ran from 1 June to 30 September in 2026. Outside the season there are usually none.
- Food and drink: a beach restaurant sits by the sand. For more choice, eat in town; see the best restaurants in Lagos.
- Sunbeds and umbrellas: for hire in summer.
- Blue Flag: Dona Ana has flown one in past years, but it wasn’t on the 2026 list. In 2026 the Lagos beaches with a Blue Flag were Luz, Meia Praia and Porto de Mós.
- Rockfall zone: Dona Ana is officially a limited-use beach (praia de uso limitado), because part of the sand is within reach of falling rock. Don’t sit right under the cliffs.
Swimming and tides
On calm days the water is clear and good for swimming, but it’s fresh even in August. Follow the lifeguard flags: red means no swimming. At high tide the sand shrinks and the inlets at each end are cut off, so go around low tide and check today’s tide times for Lagos on tides.watch.
When to go
- July and August: busy by late morning. Arrive before about 10am, or come after 5pm when the day crowds leave.
- June and September: warm, with lifeguards on duty and more space on the sand.
- October to May: quiet and good for walks, with no lifeguards. The restaurant may keep shorter hours.

Boat and kayak trips
Boat trips to the Ponta da Piedade grottoes leave from Lagos marina and the riverfront, usually last 60 to 90 minutes and pass Dona Ana and Camilo. Small local boats also leave from the steps below the lighthouse, and guided kayak tours paddle the same coast when the sea is calm. Book a morning slot, when the water is usually calmest. Where to stay nearby
The streets above the beach are quieter than the old town and within walking distance of the coves. Dona Ana Garden is about 300m from the beach, with a pool and free parking. See where to stay in Lagos and the best hotels in Lagos.
Plan it: See the grottoes from the water on a Lagos kayak tour, and find a place to stay in Lagos.
