The Best Hotels in Tavira

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 8 October 2026

Tavira is the prettiest town in the Algarve, with a Roman-style bridge, whitewashed streets, island beaches and a calm, traditional feel. It’s also a great base for the eastern Algarve. Here are the best hotels in Tavira, from a 16th-century convent to family resorts and adults-only retreats.

Quick answer: for history and charm, the Pousada Convento de Tavira in the old town. For families, Vila Galé Albacora (with a boat to the island) or Pedras d’El Rei by Barril beach. For couples, the adults-focused AP Maria Nova Lounge or the small Quinta da Lua. For something fun and stylish, OZADI Tavira.

The Best Hotels in Tavira

Why stay in Tavira

Tavira has kept its old character. There are no high-rise strips, just a river lined with fishing boats, more than 20 churches, a ruined castle with a garden and streets of tiled houses. The beaches are out on the sandbar islands of the Ria Formosa, so you take a short boat ride or walk across the lagoon to reach long, uncrowded sand. Evenings are quiet and relaxed. If you want big nightlife, stay further west; if you want a real Portuguese town with the beach close by, Tavira is ideal.

The best hotels in Tavira

1. Pousada Convento de Tavira

A 16th-century convent in the historic centre, with a cloister courtyard, a garden and a pool. Walk to everything in town, including the old bridge over the Gilão river. It has just over 30 rooms and suites. The hotel closed for structural works from mid-January to mid-May 2026 and has been open again since then, so book through the official site or a big booking platform for current dates. Check prices

2. Vila Galé Albacora

A converted tuna-fishing village in the Ria Formosa natural park, with pools and a boat to Ilha de Tavira’s beach. Peaceful and great for families. The fishermen’s cottages are now rooms, and the old village chapel still stands. It works best in the warmer months; check which dates it is open if you are travelling in winter. Check prices

3. Vila Galé Tavira

A central, family-friendly hotel near the river, with a spa and kids’ club. You can walk to the old town and the ferry stop. Check prices

4. AP Maria Nova Lounge (adults-focused)

A hotel on the hillside a short walk from the old town, with indoor and outdoor pools, a swim-up bar, a spa and a rooftop bar with views over the rooftops. It has long been sold as adults only, but some booking sites now list it as “adults friendly”, so check the child policy if a quiet stay matters to you. Check prices

5. OZADI Tavira

A retro-styled hotel just outside town with two pools and a free shuttle into the centre and to the beach ferry. Fun and good value, with free parking. Check the shuttle times when you arrive. Check prices

6. Pedras d’El Rei

An apartment resort next to the footbridge to Praia do Barril and its anchor cemetery, with pools and a kids’ club in season. The apartments have kitchens, which helps families keep costs down. Check prices

7. Quinta da Lua (small B&B)

A tiny, much-loved boutique B&B in the countryside about 4km from Tavira, with a saltwater pool and excellent breakfasts. With only a handful of rooms, it books up early for summer. You will want a car. Check prices

Where to stay in Tavira

  • The old town: walk to restaurants, the river and the ferry stop.
  • Outside town: quintas and resorts with pools, quieter but needing a car or shuttle.
  • Near the beaches: Pedras d’El Rei and Cabanas for easy beach days.

Getting there

  • By train: regional trains run along the Algarve line from Faro to Tavira in about 35 minutes, and the whole line has been electric since July 2026. From Lisbon, take a fast train to Faro and change there. Tavira station is a short walk from the old town.
  • By car: Faro airport is about 40 minutes away. The A22 motorway has been toll-free since January 2025.
  • By bus: long-distance coaches link Tavira with Lisbon. See Lisbon to the Algarve.
  • Parking: the old town lanes are narrow, so use the car parks by the river and walk in.

Getting to the beaches

  • Ilha de Tavira: ferries leave all year from Quatro Águas, about 2km from the centre, and the crossing takes under ten minutes. In summer, boats usually also run from the town centre. Fares are only a few euros.
  • Praia do Barril: cross the footbridge from Pedras d’El Rei, then walk about 1km across the lagoon or ride the small tourist train for a couple of euros. The anchor cemetery is at the end, by the beach.

How long to stay

Three or four nights lets you see the town, spend a day on Ilha de Tavira or Barril, and take a trip to Cacela Velha, Olhão or across the border to Spain. A week makes Tavira a relaxed base for the whole eastern Algarve.

Food

Tavira has a long fishing history, and tuna was once the big catch. Look for tuna steaks and octopus on menus: nearby Santa Luzia is known for octopus. Try cataplana, a seafood stew cooked in a copper pan, and finish with almond and fig sweets. See cataplana in the Algarve.

Tips

  • Beaches are on the islands: take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira or walk across to Barril. See Tavira and the eastern Algarve.
  • Ferry times change with the seasons, with far more boats in summer. Check before you go.
  • The train links Tavira to Faro in about 35 minutes. See Faro airport transfers.
  • The water is warmer in the east than the west of the Algarve.
  • Book early for July and August, when the small hotels fill fast.

FAQ

Is the Pousada Convento de Tavira open?

Yes. It closed for structural works from 19 January to 15 May 2026 and reopened after that.

Do you need a car in Tavira?

Not if you stay in the old town, as the train, the island ferries and the restaurants are all within walking distance. For Quinta da Lua and the resorts outside town, a car or a hotel shuttle makes life much easier.

Which Tavira hotel is best for families?

Vila Galé Albacora has pools and its own boat to the island beach. Pedras d’El Rei has apartments with kitchens right by the Barril footbridge, and Vila Galé Tavira has a kids’ club in town.

Is Tavira a good choice in winter?

Yes, if you want a quiet, mild break. Ferries run far less often, some places close or open fewer days, so check opening dates before you book.
