The Best Hotels in Lagos, Portugal (Every Budget)

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 7 October 2026

Lagos is our favourite base in the Algarve: a lively old town inside medieval walls, gorgeous cove beaches, boat trips to the grottos of Ponta da Piedade and great restaurants. Here are the best hotels in Lagos for every budget, from clifftop wellness resorts to good-value guesthouses in the centre.

Quick answer: for luxury, Cascade Wellness Resort (clifftop, spa, kids’ club) or Iberostar Selection on Meia Praia. For a stylish central stay, Lagos Avenida. For families, Vila Galé Lagos or Tivoli Lagos. For value, Hotel Marina Rio or Dona Ana Garden. Stay in or near the old town if you don’t have a car.

Why stay in Lagos

Lagos works for almost everyone. Couples get the old town’s cobbled lanes, seafood restaurants and sunset views. Families get Meia Praia, one of the longest and gentlest beaches in the western Algarve. Walkers get the clifftop path to Ponta da Piedade, and everyone gets easy boat trips into the sea caves. It is also the end of the Algarve railway line, so you can manage without a car if you stay central.

Where to stay in Lagos

  • Old town: walk to restaurants, bars and the marina. Can be noisy at night in summer.
  • Meia Praia: a long, flat beach east of town, with big resorts. Great for families; about 10–20 minutes’ walk or a short taxi to town.
  • Dona Ana and Porto de Mós: near the famous cove beaches and Ponta da Piedade, quieter and a little uphill.

Luxury

1. Cascade Wellness Resort

A five-star clifftop resort above Porto de Mós beach, now run by Domes Resorts, with a big spa, several restaurants, a kids’ club and villas. Stunning sea views and the Ponta da Piedade cliff walk on the doorstep. It sits about 2km from the centre, so expect to drive or taxi into town for dinner. Check prices at Cascade

2. Iberostar Selection Lagos Algarve

A five-star resort right on Meia Praia, with indoor and outdoor pools and a spa. Ideal if you want a big beach in front of you. Some rooms face the sea, usually for a supplement, and the old town is about five minutes away by car. Check prices at Iberostar Lagos

3. Casa Mãe

A design boutique hotel at the edge of the old town, set around a 19th-century house and its kitchen garden. There is a farm-to-table restaurant using produce from the garden, several pools and beautifully simple rooms, split between suites in the old house, a modern whitewashed building and a few bungalows. One of the most stylish stays in the Algarve. Book directly on the hotel’s website.

Mid-range and families

4. Lagos Avenida Hotel

A four-star facing the marina and riverfront with a rooftop pool, and home to the Michelin-listed Avenida restaurant. Walk to everything: the old town, the ferry quay for boat trips and the bus station are all close. Check prices at Lagos Avenida

5. Tivoli Lagos

Built like a whitewashed village in the centre of town, with pools, and a free shuttle to its own Duna Beach Club on Meia Praia in the warmer months (check the dates when you book). Great for families who want both town and beach. Check prices at Tivoli Lagos

6. Vila Galé Lagos

A family-friendly resort about 150m from Meia Praia, with a huge outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a children’s pool, a spa and a kids’ club. Check prices at Vila Galé Lagos

7. WOT Lagos Montemar

A simple, good-value hotel near the centre (formerly Hotel Montemar, now listed as WOT Lagos Montemar Soul), with balconies and a bar. It is uphill and about 1.5km from the beach, so a car helps. Check prices at WOT Lagos Montemar

Budget and value

8. Hotel Marina Rio

A friendly three-star opposite the marina with a rooftop pool (heated in the cooler months) and excellent reviews. Great value for the location, and handy for the train and bus stations. Check prices at Marina Rio

9. Dona Ana Garden

Gardens and a pool, 300m from Praia Dona Ana, and pet-friendly on request. Some rooms have kitchenettes, there is free parking and the centre is about 10 minutes on foot. A relaxed, good-value base. Check prices at Dona Ana Garden

10. Mar Azul

A simple, budget guesthouse right in the old town, with bay views from some rooms at the back. Breakfast isn’t included, but cafes are on the doorstep. Check prices at Mar Azul

Getting to Lagos

  • By car: Lagos is about 90km from Faro airport, around an hour on the A22, which has been toll-free since January 2025.
  • By train: Lagos is the western end of the Algarve line, now fully electric. Regional trains from Faro usually take a little under two hours, and since July 2026 many run straight through to Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. You still change at Tunes for trains to and from Lisbon.
  • By bus: Rede Expressos and FlixBus run from Lisbon, usually in about four hours.
  • Transfers: see Faro airport transfers.

How long to stay

Three or four nights lets you see the old town, do a boat trip to Ponta da Piedade and spend a lazy day on Meia Praia. With a week, add day trips to Sagres and Cape St Vincent, the wild beaches of the west coast and the mountains at Monchique. See Sagres and Cape St Vincent.

When to go

July and August are hot, busy and expensive. May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea air, easier parking and lower prices. Winter is mild and quiet, and many hotels drop their rates, though some restaurants and beach bars close for a few weeks.

Booking tips

  • Book early for July and August, when Lagos is full and prices are highest.
  • Parking: the old town is tricky for cars, so check your hotel’s parking.
  • Noise: light sleepers should avoid rooms above the old town bars.
  • Hills: the Dona Ana side is uphill from the centre. Fine for most people, but harder with a buggy or heavy bags.
  • Getting there: about an hour from Faro airport. See Faro airport transfers.
