Obidos Christmas Village 2026: Dates, Tickets and Tips
Every Christmas, the castle grounds at the top of the walled town of Óbidos become Óbidos Vila Natal, a ticketed Christmas village for families. The 2026/27 edition has a Pinocchio and puppets theme, with Santa’s house, an ice slide, workshops and shows. The town is about an hour north of Lisbon. Here are the dates, prices and hours, and how to plan the day.
Quick answer: Óbidos Vila Natal runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, inside the castle walls. Tickets cost €12 from age 12 and €8 for children aged 3 to 11, and under-3s go free. A family ticket for two adults and two children is €36. Entry is by timed session, so book online. The ice rink costs extra. From Lisbon, take the Rápida Verde express bus from Campo Grande (about an hour, €9.45) or drive the A8. There are no trains.

Dates and opening hours 2026/27
- Fridays, weekends and public holidays (27 November to 3 January): 10am to 9pm.
- Monday to Thursday, 30 November to 17 December: 10am to 6pm.
- Monday to Thursday, 21 to 30 December: 10am to 8pm.
- 24 and 31 December: 10am to 5pm.
- Closed: 25 December and 1 January.
The 1 and 8 December public holidays fall on Tuesdays in 2026, so they get the longer hours. Last year’s edition ran from 28 November 2025 to 4 January 2026.
Ticket prices
The same prices apply on every day of the event:
- General (age 12 and over): €12.
- Child (3 to 11): €8. Under-3s go free.
- Student (12 to 25) and over-65: €11, with proof.
- Family: €36 for two adults and two children, €42 with three children, €48 with four.
Entry is by hourly session: you can go in at any time during the hour you chose, then stay until closing. Tickets go on sale online from 5 November 2026, through the BOL ticket site linked from the official Óbidos Vila Natal website. Until then, pre-sale vouchers can be swapped for a session later. Capacity is limited, so book weekends early. On the day there are ticket offices by the tourist office and at the event entrance. Guests at hotels inside the walls need a ticket too.
What’s inside
The village fills the walled castle grounds at the highest point of town. The ticket includes:
- Santa’s house: children meet Santa after the elves’ lie-detector test, and can post letters to him.
- Pinocchio’s Dive: an ice slide ridden on rubber rings.
- Pinocchio’s world: Geppetto’s neighbourhood, the Great Fish you can walk inside, and a workshop where children build a puppet.
- Shows: stage shows, a puppet theatre, storytelling and a display of Santo Aleixo puppets, a traditional Portuguese puppet theatre.
- Games: a play area, medieval games and face painting.
- Christmas market: stalls of local crafts, gifts and seasonal food.
The ice rink (Mar Gelado) costs extra: €6 for 15 minutes, for ages 6 and up. The train and mini Ferris wheel are €3 a ride or €10 for five, and the carousel is €3. There’s a food court, and you can bring your own food. It’s all outdoors, so dress warmly. See Portugal with kids for more family ideas.
Getting there from Lisbon
- Bus: the Rápida Verde, run by Rodoviária do Oeste, leaves from stands around Campo Grande metro station and takes about an hour. At 2026 fares a single costs €9.45, or €4.75 for children aged 4 to 12. Check the timetable and the last bus back before an evening visit. See Portugal by bus.
- Car: about an hour on the tolled A8, leaving at exit 15. Compare hire cars and see car rental in Portugal.
- Train: there are no trains between Lisbon and Óbidos. The Oeste line has been closed between Meleças and Caldas da Rainha since storm Kristin in January 2026, and the Lisbon end isn’t due to reopen until early 2027.
Parking and access
Cars can’t enter the walled town. There are five car parks around Óbidos, three paid and two free, with room for more than 4,000 cars. The main one is beside the tourist office, about 200 metres from the town gate. From there you cross the whole town to the castle, on cobbles with steps and slopes, so pushchairs and wheelchairs are hard work. There’s a separate entrance for people with reduced mobility. Cash machines are few and get busy, so bring some cash.
Best time to visit
The quietest days are Monday to Thursday in late November and early December. Weekends, the December holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year are the busiest. Go early, before the tour coaches arrive.
It’s dark by about 5:30pm, and the lit streets look best after dusk. Until 17 December the village closes at 6pm from Monday to Thursday, so for a longer evening go on a Friday, at the weekend or between 21 and 30 December.
Make a day of it in Óbidos
The town itself is free. Walk part of the 1.5km of town walls, which have no railings, so take care. Browse Rua Direita, see the tiled Igreja de Santa Maria, and look into Livraria de Santiago, a bookshop in a converted church. Try ginjinha, sour-cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup, for a euro or two. See the Óbidos guide and the ginjinha guide.
Staying the night lets you see the town after the day-trippers leave. The Pousada Castelo Óbidos is in the castle itself. See where to stay in Óbidos.
Nearby: Caldas da Rainha and Nazaré
Caldas da Rainha, 10 minutes away, has a daily morning fruit market and the Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics museum and shop. Nazaré is about 40 minutes north, and winter is big-wave season: watch from the lighthouse fort above Praia do Norte. See Caldas da Rainha and Nazaré.
Plan it: Find a place to stay in Óbidos, book a guided walk or tasting, or see the town with Nazaré on a day tour from Lisbon.
