Lisbon Airport to Sintra: Train, Taxi, Uber and Transfers

By the Portugal Travel Tips team · Updated 3 November 2026

Sintra is about 30km west of Lisbon airport, so plenty of travellers head straight there after landing. Here are the options, with 2026 fares, the new airport taxi prices and what to do if you land late.

Quick answer: with light bags, take the metro red line three stops to Oriente, then a direct CP train to Sintra (about 47 minutes). It costs €3.77 in zapping credit, plus €0.50 for the card. With heavy bags, children or a late flight, an Uber or Bolt (about €25 to €45) or a taxi (a set €53.40 by day) takes you to the door.

By metro and train

Every arriving flight uses Terminal 1, where you find the metro, the taxi rank and the ride-app pick-up. More in Lisbon airport to the city centre.

Tickets

Buy a green navegante card (€0.50) at the metro machines and load it with zapping credit. A metro trip costs €1.72 and a CP train €2.05, so €5 each covers the journey. Each traveller needs their own card. Skip the €1.90 metro single, as a card holds one ticket type at a time and that single isn’t valid on trains. See the Lisbon public transport guide.

Route 1: via Oriente (simplest with luggage)

  • Metro: red line from Aeroporto, three stops to Oriente, about 7 minutes. No change.
  • Train: follow the CP signs up to the platforms. Sintra line trains run direct to Sintra in about 47 minutes, calling at Entrecampos on the way.
  • Frequency: roughly every 30 minutes for most of the day, less often than from Rossio. Check the CP app.
  • Why it suits luggage: one metro ride, and a large modern station with lifts and escalators.

Route 2: via Rossio

Take the red line to Alameda, change to the green line and get off at Rossio. Rossio station, the neo-Manueline building near Restauradores, is a short walk. Trains leave every 20 minutes at busy times and every 30 minutes early and late, and take about 40 minutes. A single ticket is €2.55 without zapping. The change at Alameda is a long walk, so this route suits light bags. More in Lisbon to Sintra.

Arriving in Sintra

Sintra station is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the old town, partly uphill, and the 434 bus to Pena starts outside. With heavy bags, take a taxi or a ride app. Since July 2026, Uber and Bolt in Sintra can only use set pick-up and drop-off points. See visiting Sintra.

By Uber or Bolt

Follow the TVDE signs from arrivals to the pick-up zone in the P2 car park next to Terminal 1. A standard car to Sintra usually costs about €25 to €45. Surge pricing has had no cap since September 2026, so compare both apps. Child seats are rare. See Uber vs Bolt vs taxi.

By taxi

The rank is outside arrivals. The fixed-fare scheme that began on 15 October 2026 has two zones inside Lisbon, and Sintra is outside both, with its own set price. Taxis in the scheme charge €53.40 on weekdays from 7am to 10pm and €64 at night, at weekends and on holidays, for up to four people with luggage.

Taking part is voluntary for drivers. Buy a voucher at the Ask Me Lisboa desk in arrivals, or confirm the set price before you leave. Otherwise the meter runs, and the consumer group DECO says the meter can work out cheaper on some routes.

By private transfer

A driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and tracks your flight. Expect from about €40 for a car to Sintra. Welcome Pickups has fixed prices paid in advance and free child seats on request. Give your flight number, not a landing time.

By hire car

The rental desks are in the terminal. The drive takes 30 to 40 minutes without traffic, usually via the IC19, and much longer at rush hour. A car is little use in Sintra itself: most private cars have been barred from the historic centre since 2023, they can’t drive up to Pena, and parking is scarce. Without hotel parking, use the free Lourel car park and take the 434 or 435 bus in. Compare prices on Discover Cars, and read car rental in Portugal and driving in Portugal.

Landing late

  • Metro: runs from 6:30am to about 1am.
  • Last trains: the last Sintra trains leave Rossio at about 1am and Oriente a few minutes later, reaching Sintra just before 2am. Works can change late services, so check the CP app.
  • Be realistic: Sintra station is quiet after midnight and taxis are scarce. Land after about 10pm and a taxi, ride app or transfer makes more sense.
  • Very late: sleep near the airport and travel in the morning. See Lisbon airport hotels.

Lisbon airport to Cascais

Take the red line to Alameda, the green line to Cais do Sodré, then the coastal CP train, about 40 minutes. Allow about an hour and a half in all, at the same zapping prices. Buses replace trains between Caxias and Cascais in the evenings, from about 9:50pm on weekdays and earlier at weekends. Airport taxis in the scheme charge the same set price as for Sintra, and Uber or Bolt cost a little more, as the drive is longer. See Lisbon to Cascais.

First night: Sintra or Lisbon?

Plan it: book a fixed-price airport pick-up, find a room in Sintra and get Pena Palace tickets for your first morning.
